April Hill left Atlantans dreaming of tea time with felines earlier this year when the Georgia State University graduate announced she would open Atlanta’s first cat café.

At the time Hill didn’t have the funds to open what she dubbed “Happy Tabby,” let alone a lease for the cat café and adoption agency, but was actively raising capital and awareness through a Kickstarter campaign.

But dream no more, cat-loving friends. Happy Tabby is happening.

Hill Thursday filed plans with City of Atlanta to buildout space, at 527 Irwin Street N.E., for the cat café.

An estimated $50,000 would be spent building out the 2,198-square-foot space in a “100-year-old building that was once Martin Luther King Jr.’s weekly barber shop,” Hill told What Now Atlanta in an email Thursday.

Happy Tabby is “taking over and combining the two spots next to the salon to make one huge cat café.”

At Happy Tabby, guests can chill with 15 to 20 cats at any given time after an $8 admission which excludes food and beverages. All cats will be available for adoption, and Hill has teamed up with Fur Kids Atlanta to cast the cats that will be on rotation.

Another cat café, Java Cats, is also planned for Atlanta and although announced second, will probably open ahead of Happy Tabby.
