“In New Orleans, You Can Get Killed If You Call [a snoball] a snow cone” — Dylan Williams

You’ve been warned! So train yourself to understand what a SnoBall is through this analogy: “A SnoBall is to a snow cone as Warren Beatty is to Shirley MacLaine: closely related, but prettier, smoother and infinitely cooler.” The New York Times Dining and Wine section does a great job of differentiating the two here.

Now that you understand the difference, your opportunity to try an authentic SnoBall awaits as New Orleans SnoBall Cafe officially opens today in Decatur at 340 West Ponce de Leon avenue Suite 100.

Co-owners Jared Scanlon and Vicki Sanders are excited by the warm welcome they’ve received from the citizens of Decatur; their welcome was a bit cooler.

“We serve the authentic SnoBall from New Orleans and it’s the best frozen treat available in Atlanta,” said Scanlon, formerly in the trucking business. “We’re bringing New Orleans to Atlanta.”

The process begins by freezing water into cubed blocks of ice. The ice is then added to the “snow machine” which literally breaks the ice into a snow like consistency that is “moldable” into a SnoBall frozen treat.

Using a variety of flavors that include organic, sugar free and light sugar options, the flavors mold everything together. Some of the SnoBalls, like “The Dukes Stuffed SnoBall” is layered with shaved ice, soft served ice cream, and topped with chocolate syrup and organic whipped cream (pictured right).

New Orleans SnoBall Cafe also offers a muffuletta sandwich and a muffuletta salad, authentic of course. There is also a retail element at the cafe, so prepare to shop as well.

  3. There is plenty of parking in the back of that building, which is not too obvious from the from. Tried a snoball here last week and just LOVED it – looking forward to many, many more!
