Aldi’s Looking to Open a New Grocery Store on Cascade Road

Rezoning the Cascade Road parcel would pave the way for a new grocery store and unique pocket park.

Aldi has submitted plans for a new grocery store at 3434 and 3450 Cascade Road SW. The discount grocery store development would require the removal of the existing gas station and abandoned single-family home on the combined properties.

Last month, the chain submitted a rezoning application to the City of Atlanta seeking the appropriate land use approvals for the Cascade Road project. Neighborhood Planning Unit -I will consider making a recommendation on the request during their November 17th meeting.

According to the application, the request to rezone the property from R-3 to C-1 only applies to the 3434 Cascade Road parcel because 3450 Cascade Road is already appropriately zoned C-1 District.

The site plan indicates the grocery store is accompanied by a large parking lot containing landscaped islands, along with a “small pocket park” in front of the building, which will “enhance attractiveness and walkability with the Cascade Road Corridor,” according to Al Keeler, Director of Real Estate-Aldi, Inc.

While new landscaping is proposed to be part of the overall development plan, the existing lots do contain a significant amount of natural vegetation, which will be impacted by the construction of the building and parking lot. According to the rezoning application, an extensive tree survey has been completed. Aldi Engineers are working with the City of Atlanta’s Arborist in efforts to collaborate on a tree preservation plan and agreement as the project continues through the development review process.

According to the Aldi website, headquartered in Batavia, Illinois, the chain has over 2.000 stores across thirty-six states and employs over 25,000 people. Additionally, while they partner with national growers, Aldi offers locally grown, in-season produce, including organic fruits and vegetables, USDA Choice meats, and gluten-free options.

The Aldi rezoning request is scheduled to be heard by the Zoning Review Board on December 2nd or 9th.

  1. Wow, this is at 285 and Cascade Rd. Traffic is already pretty rough in that area. You will have to be coming from one direction to get there. Happy to see a new grocery store in the area, but!

    1. I own the house adjacent to both properties and I am extremely upset with the city of Atlanta, the mayor and the city council about this . No one has informed residents of the subdivision behind those properties and Aldi’s should have had their real estate division contact the home owners in the subdivision. It is ashamed that you put these people in office and conspire behind your back with developer’s and contractors to disrupt your quality of life. I am upset with the city,the zoning dept., and Aldi’s for this to be even happening. My name is Warren C.Head Jr. I live at 1235 Shanter Trail SW, the property adjacent to both parcels.

      1. NIMBY: a person who objects to the siting of something perceived as unpleasant or hazardous in the area where they live, especially while raising no such objections to similar developments elsewhere.
