Franchisee Charles Wang tells What Now Atlanta that a September 2022 opening is the target timeline. “We want to do this correctly and not rush to market, pun intended,” Wang said.

Wang purchased the Earl of Sandwich in Phipps Plaza in October 2021 and plans on opening a third Atlanta location in 2023. “We are also working on another restaurant concept and hope to share it with the community in the upcoming year,” Wang said.

Earl of Sandwich will open in space once planned for Ponix in a deal that was brokered on both sides by Steve Josovitz and Sean McPherson of The Shumacher Group. Ponix, a local food producer and distributor, never opened.

“The Sweet Auburn market has such a rich and nuanced history in Atlanta for over a century, and it will be an honor to be a part of its future,” Wang said. “We’re excited to introduce our gourmet sandwiches to the community and hope to attract more people to this important landmark, not just for us, but for other vendors as well.”

The Municipal Market got its start in 1918 as an open air market, according to its website. The building that houses the market today opened in 1924. Referred to as the “Curb Market” by locals, it houses thirty local businesses.

“I just wanted to express my sincerest gratitude for the opportunity to be part of a wonderful community and hope we can serve them delicious sandwiches for many years to come,” Wang said.
