Justin Craft, general manager for the steakhouse at 3379 Peachtree Road, told What Now Atlanta over the phone Thursday, Morton’s closed its doors for good on Wednesday.

He would not comment on why the steakhouse closed its Buckhead location.

Concierges at neighboring hotels where notified Wednesday that Morton’s in Buckhead had closed “effective immediately.”

Morton’s has a location Downtown that will remain open. The Buckhead location has already been removed from the steakhouse’s location listings on its website.

The Company owns and operates 77 Morton’s steakhouses located in 64 cities in 27 states, and in Puerto Rico and six international locations (Toronto, Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, and Mexico City), as well as Trevi, our Las Vegas Italian restaurant, according to its Facebook page.

Morton’s was not immediately available for comment.

  1. The incessant construction going on outside their front door for the last two years couldn’t have helped them.

  2. Agreed, Urbanist. Not shedding any tears with this one… always sad to see a restaurant leave when you think about jobs lost, etc, but I wont miss this place one bit Atlanta has SO many better (and local) options.

  3. palm is worse – steak wise. especially for the price. 🙂 I would love some better restaurants in buckhead – but not near the train-wreck that is ‘Buckhead Atlanta’

  4. Will the last one to leave Buckhead please turn off the light? Maybe if the city actually worked on fixing traffic issues for once, people might be inclined to go to Buckhead every once in awhile. I’ve been here 5 years and traffic seems to get worse all the time in Buckhead, as well as the construction. I avoid Buckhead at all costs, especially on weekends, but even on weekdays it’s a zoo. You’d think the city and Buckhead business leaders would work together to improve traffic flow. I guess not. We have a bunch of incompetent morons running this city. I guess I have to drive up to Roswell to get a bite.

  5. The company that now owns Morton’s Steakhouses (as of Dec 2011, they’ve been discussing the deal and it just went into effect yesterday), is called Landry Group. They also own Bubba Gump and Rainforest Cafe. That being said, they’ve assessed how sales and stock have been declining in recent years and want to not only revamp the image, but menu and overall experience. Their goal is to also minimize number of restaurants to several “flagship” locations instead of flooding the market with as many as a city can support. I’ll be interested to see what goes in their buckhead space.

  6. Steakhouses survive off of expense accounts, and I am amazed when I’m traveling how often clients want to eat at predictable high-end chains when there’s always deservedly famous local steakhouses in every great city. I always assumed Morton’s was for business travelers only since there are at least 5 fantastic steaks within spitting distance (although I have to agree about the Palm not being one of them).

  7. @ Alexander – since you clearly focus on nothing but the criticism, of which there is plenty, you’ve obviously missed a lot of my complimentary comments about what are some exceptional places in this city.

Hal’s has an excellent steak, but their vibe is too traditional for me. Rathbun’s is stellar. STK is also pretty damn good, and the best environment of all of Atlanta’s Steakhouses. Chops is too formulaic, and Bones is good, but second to Hal’s in terms of good/traditional. NY Prime is so/so too.

  8. Morton’s is just the latest in a recent rash of acquisitions by Landry’s Inc, along with Oceanaire, McCormick & Schmicks, and Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. And along with their traditional subsidiaries Chart House, Crab House, and Landry’s Seafood, they seem to be trying to bolster their high-end offerings, and corner the seafood market at all levels.

  9. From former employee, this has been 2/3 years coming. Sales @this location, not so strong. The D’town one is their meat & potaoes for Atl, mainly due to a large banquet area. As a foodlover, I think the food is good, yet, Morton’s hasn’t moved with the times and needs a Huge makeover! And the B.S. that employees went through due to what was “Spec”, was so freakin’ lame! Sometime “Spec” needed to be modified for the Guest Experience & was frowned upon. Whatever…support Local like Rathbun’s!
