Soccer in the Streets board member Sanjay Patel confirmed the project in a recent call with What Now Atlanta.
Two mini soccer fields will be installed in an 11,000 square foot space at the MARTA station with a projected budget of $300,000.
Funding for the five-a-side soccer fields is provided by a grant from Atlanta’s Major League Soccer team, the Atlanta United FC.
The initiative is a collaboration between MARTA, Atlanta United, and the non-profit grassroots soccer organization Soccer in the Streets. The goal of the project is to bring soccer to children in underserved areas of the city.
This new installation will be the second Station Soccer location. The first, announced in October 2016, is operational at the Five Points MARTA station located at 30 Alabama St. It has garnered attention from soccer organizations around the world as the first project of its kind.
