Planet Fitness Green-Lit For Construction in Cumberland Mall

The gym, known for its 'Judgement Free Zone,' will occupy a portion of the Sears that closed down in 2018.

Planet Fitness has been issued the necessary permits to build out a new location in Cumberland Mall. The gym is slated to open at the beginning of September in a portion of the former Sears building, which shut down in 2018. Reps for the mall confirmed the plans. Other tenants slated to share the massive, multi-level Sears space alongside Planet Fitness include Round 1 Bowling, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Golf Galaxy.

The new Planet Fitness is owned by Toby Hines, a longtime Planet Fitness franchisee with locations across Georgia and Florida.

“No, we don’t have a scale,” Hines said to LaGrange News when he opened the LaGrange Planet Fitness in 2016. “We don’t feel that’s the mentality we want. If you feel good, and you’re exercising and coming, we don’t want the scale to freak you out.”

The new gym space, unoccupied since Sears closed, was designed by MJM Architects. Club memberships are already available

Hines on multiple occasions did not respond to What Now Atlanta’s request for comment.
