Atlanta-born Docent Coffee in October will open a roastery in Old Fourth Ward.

The company Tuesday announced the news in a press release.

Docent’s roastery will occupy the building in which Café + Velo currently resides.

Café + Velo will “seamless” transition into Docent with little to no downtown, Docent’s Jeff Richards told What Now Atlanta in a telephone conversation.

The transition should take place over the course of a few days late-September, early October, he said.

Like it’s predecessor, Docent will have a retail coffee and café component open for breakfast and lunch.

In addition to serving many of the same menu items as Café + Velo patrons, such as in-house baked croissants, sandwiches, and toasts, Docent will also be adding a few of its own additions like acai bowls, vegan options, a wider variety of coffees, and extensive tea program.

“A great tasting coffee is indifferent to the ceremony, pretense, and circumstance with which a lot of people attempt to associate it,” Nolan Hall, Docent’s roastmaster, said in the release.

“We put 100 percent of our expertise and passion for the craft into every batch of coffee we roast and serve, and we feel the substantive experience of drinking our coffee will always convey that fact to the customer far better than any type of formality, attitude, or stylistic aesthetic we could wrap around it.”

Each of the roaster’s ten current coffees features a local artist’s work (and website) on the front of each bag like R.Land, Kyle “BlackCatTips” Brooks, and Sarah Emerson, to name few.

“This, in conjunction with individual artist pages on their website and a series of curated events and shows featuring their label artists, is just one of the ways Docent attempts to use [our] business as a promotional vehicle for the local art scene.”

A Kickstarter has been launched to raise the funds need to support the growing roaster.
