Boneheads abruptly closes at Peachtree Battle Shopping Center making way for
Maki Fresh

Boneheads Grilled Fish and Piri Piri Chicken has closed their Buckhead location.

The restaurant at 2349 Peachtree Road posted a sign on the main entrance Friday notifying patrons they had “closed for renovation until further notice.”

Ron Barber, owner of the Boneheads franchise, told What Now Atlanta Monday that the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center location has been “sold but is also closed for renovations.”

John Cassimus, who heads the Zoës Kitchen chain, has purchased the space to open Maki Fresh, a fast-service sushi restaurant, according to Barber. This will be the second location for Maki– the first is owned and operated by Cassimus in Alabama.

“There’s nowhere right now to get good sushi unless it’s a full-service restaurant or the grocery store,” Cassimus said in an interview will AL.com.

Maki (pronounced MAH-key) Fresh takes its name from the Japanese word for roll, and the restaurant will offer sushi, salads and other dishes.

An opening date for the sushi restaurant has not been confirmed.

As for Boneheads closing?

Barber said their closure was a decision based on little to “no parking available at the shopping center.” Barber even asked What Now Atlanta if we had “ever been to [Peachtree Battle] during lunch?”

We have, but not to patronize Boneheads. And parking? It was never an issue for us.

Elizabeth Meredith, owner of neighboring consignment boutique Mint Julep, told What Now Atlanta on a trip to the shopping center Sunday that she’s been so busy, she “didn’t even know they closed.”

John Storther, manager at Rite Aid Pharmacy next door, has eaten at Boneheads “once or twice.”

“I don’t really care that they have closed,” said Strother.

Either do we.

  1. Zöes Kitchen is great. I wish they would put Zöes and the new concept in Atlantic Station. There’s plenty of parking, space and just what the residents of Atlantic Station have been hoping for.

  2. Closed for renovations or because of parking. Give it a rest dude…your franchise failed. Just admit it, learn from it, and use the learnings for success in your next venture.

  3. The owner of Maki think good sushi comes from grocery store?! If that is any indication of the type of sushi Maki is bringing to Atlanta then this placed is doomed.

  4. I, for one, am bummed! I thought Boneheads was great. I ate there on occasion and liked it quite a bit. The only think I didnt like was when I saw a big ole vat of transfat they used for frying etc. but that shouldnt come as a shock to anyone really. But the chicken was very tasty and I thought the decor and ambiance was great. I dont know why everyone is giving them such a hard time. It was another great place to get tasty food where you didnt have to deal with a waiter. I am not rich, nor do I have tons of time to have a leisurely 2 hour lunch everyday so I like the self service type of places. anyway, sad to see them go. : (

  5. After reading the article and the comments, here are a few things many people don’t know. There is and has been a quick serve sushi restaurant downtown by the name of Think Sushi (404-420-0020). It’s not a full-blown, full-service, white linen restaurant. However, the orders are filled when placed unlike Publix, Krogers, etc. Our menu offers a good number of sushi items as well as pork, chicken, beef and noodle bowls. This isn’t a new concept…just fairly new to Atlanta. We’ve been open for 2 1/2 years. My wife and I look forward to visiting J.C.’s new venture and wish him the best of luck.

  6. NOOOOOOOO! I loved Boneheads at Peachtree Battle and picked up food there to take home at least once or twice a week. Are they going to relocate to a better location or are they just gone? Looks like only two left in the ATL. Open on the East/West connector in Cobb and you’ll have at least one customer every night.
