Tom Throm and his franchise partners are in negotiations with North American Properties (NAP) to open an outpost of the burger joint in the developer’s forthcoming Revel mixed-use project in Duluth.

Throm and his partners own the Wahlburgers development rights for the entire state.

NAP has countered the group’s Letter of Intent (LOI) and could hand over a “white box” space in November 2019 at which point Throm and his team would begin construction.

“The timeline is perfect because, by the time NAP hands over our space in Revel, Wahlburgers downtown will have opened,” Throm told What Now Atlanta (WNA) in a telephone interview Wednesday.

Walhburgers is currently under construction downtown, at 218 Peachtree Street NW.

First uncovered by WNA late-2018, the new restaurant—the brand’s second in Georgia following an outpost in The Battery Atlanta (pictured above)—could open in August or September.

The opening has been “delayed” because of permitting with the City of Atlanta and unforeseen construction challenges.

“We’re in a 35-year-old building made of concrete,” Throm said.

“Retrofitting that space and bringing it up to code is very difficult.”

Situated on the second floor, the new 4,800-square-foot downtown Wahlburgers will offer roughly 152 seats including on the restaurant’s outdoor patio; the selling point for the space, according to Throm.

“Mark [Wahlberg] is so excited about the downtown location,” Throm said.

“When I brought him to Atlanta to check out the space, and people on the street would ask what he’s doing in town, he would point to the balcony of the patio and say, ‘I’m putting a Wahlburgers right there.'”

Wahlberg leaves the site selection up to his franchisees but is trying to get more involved in the Atlanta market as the American actor, producer, businessman, model, rapper, and songwriter continues to make movies here, according to Throm.

Savannah could be next to get a Wahlburgers.

Throm has his “eye” on the coastal city but has not yet selected a site.

In total, Throm and his partners will open six Georgia Wahlburgers in developments with residential, office, and “some kind of venue like the SunTrust Park Stadium.”
