The Vortex in 2019 could become a non-smoking establishment after 27 years in business.

Owner Michael Benoit is putting the issue up for a vote come January 1.

“We’ve just noticed how few people are smoking at the bar these days, and the people who do smoke don’t seem to have any problem with stepping outside,” Benoit in an email Thursday told What Now Atlanta (WNA).

“In fact, sometimes they seem to prefer it. We will be very curious to review the results of the survey, and we will do our best to interpret them as accurately as possible.”

A survey, made available at the start of the year through January 31, will include both The Vortex in Midtown and Little Five Points.

“The whole point of conducting the survey is to determine what our particular clientele is looking for, so of course, we will stick by the results, whatever they happen to be.”

It is possible that Benoit could make one of the two locations non-smoking and leave the other existing policy in place.

“The survey will include questions about each location, so while any change will most likely be for both locations, there might end up being some variation between the two stores,” Benoit said.

“Again, we’ll just have to wait for the results.”

The Vortex’s current smoking policy allows customers to smoke at the bar, but not anywhere else on the premises.

Stay tuned to WNA for the survey when it goes live next week.

  1. Yes! I live across the street and won’t go because of the smoke.
Still like the no kids policy though (sorry!)

  2. I haven’t been to The Vortex in 15 or so years due to them allowing smoking at the bar. Like who in 2019 wants to eat a meal in smoke-filled air. Gag! If smoking is banned, I’ll be able to, once again, enjoy one of their delicious burgers.

  3. Yes, I haven’t been there but a couple times in nine years because of the smoking and no kids policy. My son would love one of those burgers. Not sure if no smoking means kids would be allowed in, but I would vote for both.

  4. Yes, smoke free PLEASE!!! I NEVER go to the Vortex because of the smoking. I went a couple times way back years ago and loved the food but refused to go back because of the disgusting smoke. It’s 2019 Vortex, time to get with the game on health!

  5. I would love to visit the Vortex but because they allow smoking I can’t enter the building. I would not be able to breathe due to health issues. PLEASE make it smoke free!! I am so anxious to try the food at the this restaurant. We have tried every other restaurant in the area but this one!!!

  6. Please…no smoking. Like quite a few others I won’t go to either location now because I can’t stand the foul smell of cigarette smoke ruining my meal. I’d love to have the option of returning to the Vortex but only if a non-smoking policy is adopted. Thanks.

  7. I don’t think The Vortex cares that you guys haven’t been going due to their smoking policy. They’re always busy. I think they just want to improve the experience of the restaurant.
But I vote for non-smoking and no kids.

  8. I would definitely return should it go smoke free. It has been many years since I last visited and still remember it having one of the best burgers I have ever eaten. I even order Laughing Skull beer whenever I see it available.

  9. Yes, smoke free PLEASE!!! I NEVER went to the Vortex because of the smoking. I refused to go because of the disgusting smoke I would love to try the food and the drinks looked at the menu and I wanted to go so many times. It’s 2019 Vortex, time to get with the game on health!

  10. Yes Yes Yes! I would love to go back to The Vortex, but haven’t been in years because I can’t stand the smoke. I am always surprised at restaurants that still allow smoking these days- isn’t everyone vaping now anyways?
