A building permit application with Gwinnett County seeks to demolish the existing structure at 4990 Jimmy Carter Boulevard for the grocery store. The property northeast of Atlanta was formerly an events center.

According to a letter of intent, construction of the 31,109-square-foot store is not ready to begin, but Lidl has purchased the property and seeks the demolition because “the existing structure is being vandalized.” The existing slab and pavement would remain.

When reached by What Now Atlanta, several Lidl representatives said there’s no timeline yet for the construction or opening of the new store.

Lidl is a grocery store chain headquartered in Germany. The company currently operates more than 12,000 stores and more than 220 logistics centers and warehouses in 31 countries. The first U.S. stores opened in Virginia in 2017.

There are 17 locations in Georgia, and this would be the first in Norcross. The closest existing Lidl is more than seven miles away in Peachtree Corners, at 5270 Peachtree Parkway.
