The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners has approved a redevelopment plan for the site, Atlanta Business Chronicle reports.

The 31-acre site is located off U.S. Highway 78, northeast of Atlanta. The Stone Mountain Tennis Center was located at the property before closing in 2007 then being demolished in 2018. In 2020, Fuqua Development was awarded a bid to revamp the site with a mixed-use development.

Jeffrey Fuqua, principal at Fuqua Development, told What Now Atlanta the project could begin construction in the summer of 2024.

Fuqua Development is an Atlanta-based real estate development firm that specializes in mixed-use projects. The company is the team behind several high-profile projects in metro Atlanta, including The Battery Atlanta and Madison Yards. Fuqua Development has developed 40 projects in the Southeast with a total of 4 million square feet of retail space, 7,000 multi-family units and office space, according to the company.

The plans include a 151,000-square-foot warehouse with a gas station, several restaurants and apartments, and more than 1,000 parking spaces.

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, a county official said it was too early to announce the tenants planned for the site, but the news outlet reported earlier this year that Costco had been looking at the area as a potential location for a new store. There has also been speculation that the project would include a Whataburger.
