Currently offered as “700 Baxter,” the commercial development will sit proximate to the busy Milledge Avenue and Baxter Street intersection.

Although details have not yet been made available, the development looks to rejuvenate a part of Baxter Street that has unfortunately fallen on tough times, even before the COVID-19 pandemic struck Athens.

700 Baxter will take shape out of a structure that has had many roles over the last few years including a university bookstore, hair salon, and at one point was to be the home of Athens’ first cat cafe which unfortunately never came to fruition.

With a tagline of “throw it back to old school,” the project’s sponsor, Polias Development, hopes to attract coffee shops, taco stands, drink spots, and retail as potential tenants in the new strip, according to the leasing brochure.

Although no construction is currently visible at the site, Polias Development has announced a 2021 opening timeframe. The real estate firm did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

  1. For everyone that is excited about this project, you obviously don’t live right behind where this developer is shoving TWO commercial dumpsters full of food against your personal property. He is inconsiderate and lacks moral integrity. But hey, he’ll have loads of money in his pocket so why should he care about the wellbeing of his fellow man?  #provemewrong
