Decatur is about to get a little Mexi-Cali flare. In a deal brokered by Urban Retail Advisors (URA) President Todd Semrau, Mexican-Californian fusion cafe La Chiquiada is slated to move into 120 West Trinity Place at the AMLI apartment complex in downtown Decatur.

Owner and Atlanta native Catherine Zuber has not yet announced an opening date, but is keeping her fingers crossed for August or September. “The food will be completely fresh and as authentic as it can be,” says Zuber, who lived and worked in Northern California before moving back to Georgia, “but of course, with a little Southern twist.”

Zuber hasn’t settled on a menu yet, but expect small plates, craft cocktails, a selection of Northern California beer, and Montgomery-based Prevail coffee. The space overlooks the apartment complex’s courtyard, and will boast a 1000-square-foot patio in addition to indoor banquettes and a 14-seat indoor bar.

As for the Mexi-Cali vibes, Zuber is planning for lots of live plants in an open, airy setting, wood tones and pops of color, and a floral mural spanning the length of one wall, to be painted by local artist Katherine Boggs.

When La Chiquiada does open, Zuber expects to offer weekday breakfast and lunch, and on the weekends, a special brunch and dinner menu. Soon, AMLI residents won’t have to walk any further than their backyard for a fresh, California-style breakfast sandwich or a boozy, breezy brunch.

Zuber hopes to have the La Chiquiada website and social media accounts up and running soon, so stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
