When the new Fairfield opens next month, it will be the fourth Marriott flag in the area joining SpringHill Suites Athens Downtown, SpringHill Suites Athens West, and Courtyard Athens Downtown.

Located at 175 Old Epps Bridge Road, the new property will have 78 guestrooms and 18 suites spread across five floors along with amenities including a fitness center and swimming pool. The building will also have a dedicated two-story parking garage on-site. Although a Fairfield Inn & Suites was proposed to be built further west at 2500 Atlanta Highway back in 2016, this location is significantly closer to Athens’ downtown-core and the number of rooms exceeds the previous proposal’s by four.

Under construction since early 2020, the Landmark Construction & Development built hotel sits adjacent to an under-construction Andy’s Frozen Custard. Formerly a KFC, construction has begun on the new Andy’s Frozen Custard with demolition work already completed.

The block encompassed by Broad Street, Hawthorne Avenue, and Old Epps Bridge Road has been a glimmer of hope along the recently troubled corridor. As vacant storefronts and closures litter much of Broad Street and Atlanta Highway, this block has had three new developments emerge in the last 12 months including the Fairfield Inn & Suites, Andy’s Frozen Custard, and a rebirthed Checker’s.

An exact opening date for the hotel and custard joint has not been announced, and reps for the companies this week did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
