ISSA FUNNEL will occupy 350 square feet at Switchman Hall, the food hall planned for the Terminal South development, offering a gourmet spin on the funnel cake.

The concept comes from Chris and Ka’Ron Conwell. The idea was born during the throes of COVID-19 lockdown with three children (including a newborn). Chris was working more than 60 hours a week as the general manager of three corporate pizza restaurants while Ka’Ron – a healthcare worker on maternity leave – held down the fort at home.

A postpartum craving led to a homemade funnel cake, for which Ka’Ron tweaked the recipe until it was perfect. She started bringing her creations to friends, family members and neighbors, getting creative with toppings.

Guests can select from the 12 signature funnel cake offerings or come up with their own concoctions, choosing from more than 18 toppings.

Customer favorites include the Roblox (strawberries and fruity pebbles with a cream cheese glaze), the Fortnite (mini marshmallows and crumbled Oreo cookies with a cream cheese glaze), the Goddess (strawberries, crumbled Biscoff cookies and cookie butter) and the Cinnamon Apple (apples, Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal and cream cheese glaze). The menu also includes “Medallions,” which are fried Oreos available in quantities of four, six or eight.

ISSA FUNNEL is expected to open at Terminal South early next year.

The development is located in Atlanta’s Peoplestown neighborhood, steps away from the Atlanta BeltLine. It will be the final stop on the city’s first-ever bus rapid transit line, MARTA Rapid. Slated to open in early 2025, the project features the adaptive reuse of two former warehouse structures, introducing approximately 45,625 square feet of mixed-use space that will include a collection of restaurants at the planned food hall, Switchman Hall.

“What really sold me on ISSA FUNNEL joining Switchman Hall was how they’ve been able to reimagine this nostalgic carnival treat, and bring something really fun and different to our food hall,” Melissa Ahrendt, Stafford’s executive director of real estate and Terminal South’s developer, said in a news release. “Funnel cakes are delicious, but their funnel cakes are on a whole new Instagrammable level.”
