Phase one demolition and construction will begin late spring and early summer of next year beginning with the creation of a “first-floor Main Street corridor throughout the campus,” according to the report.

A major goal of the renovation project is to make better use of the company’s lawns, lobbies, cafeterias, auditoriums and conference rooms.

The huge cafeteria, which stands empty for much of the day, will be replaced with three separate eating areas, all with first-floor access to outdoor seating. Conference rooms could get state-of-the-art audio systems in the ceilings. The guts of the technical building, where Coca-Cola does research, development and analysis, will be upgraded.

  1. God nows they can afford a remodel. Maybe they can remedy the Fort Knox appearance the campus has as of now, put on a more friendly face for the world.

  2. Many of those buildings built in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s (Bellsouth, anyone) have imposing prison like edifices that really don’t relate to the streetscape at all. It would be interesting to see the same type renovation attempted on the Mart buildings downtown but I’m not sure it it would work since most of those buildings are showrooms.

  3. From what I’m reading, it looks like they are just planning 1st floor renovations and interior remodeling. I don’t think it’s anything we would notice from the outside.

  4. I wish they would do something about their streetscape on Luckie Street and Marietta Street. That part of their campus is one of Downtown’s biggest eyesores!

  5. It’s a bunch of parking lots and decks hidden behind walls and fences. And where is all this greenspace the AJC article talks about? There are houses over in Vine City with larger lawns that the little strips of landscaping shoved in between the streets, buildings, and parking facilities of the Coca-Cola “campus”.

They might pretty up the inside but the outside is still going to shout FU pedestrian. Looks like they don’t understand the anti-suburban generation at all. But all the window dressing will be nice for the people who do work inside the buildings, so that’s nice.

  6. Chris,

Coca Cola has been moving all of its employees in the main tower to other parts of the campus. The whole entire building is going to be redone, essentially. I am positive that in addition to updating the interior features and the building systems, there will be another blue-green glass facade placed on the exterior and LEED certification will be attained. I know someone who works for a firm that was in the bid selection process and they presented a similar plan.

Below is a building in DC that is owned by Tishman Speyer and was built about the same time as the Coke building with a similar design/facade. It underwent renovations in 2009, which included a new travertine lobby, new building systems, and a new glass facade. I took these pictures during the Snowmageddon a few years ago, but I could not find out who did the architectural work.
