The convenience store and gas station will be built in Valdosta, according to construction plans. The scope of work includes “the construction of a one-story convenience store with fuel canopy, associated parking spaces, stormwater management and utility infrastructure,” according to the plans. Valdosta is in Lowndes County.
What Now Atlanta has identified several other sites where Wawa locations are planned, mostly in the southeast and southwest regions of the state, including Bainbridge, Hinesville, Brunswick, Pooler and Jesup.
These locations, as well as the Valdosta one, align with the company’s plans to expand to “southern and coastal” areas of the state. The company announced plans in 2022 to open its first Georgia location in 2024. Wawa plans to build and open 26 stores in Georgia over the next five to eight years, opening three to four stores per year.
The company announced last month that ground has been broken on the Brunswick and Jesup locations, which are expected to open later this year. Groundbreaking events will be held on May 1 for the stores in Hinesville and Pooler.
Wawa first began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey before becoming a dairy production business and eventually a food market in the 20th century. There are now more than 1,040 corporate-owned locations across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington, D.C.
In addition to the typical convenience-store offerings, Wawa is popular for its subs, breakfast sandwiches and coffee beverages.
