Are Those The Keys To Woody’s In Your Pocket or Are You Just Happy To Own Me?

Woody’s Famous Philadelphia Cheesesteaks, a quick service restaurant located in Midtown, will reopen after a minor re-conception under new ownership.

Originally opened by David Pastoria in 1975, Woody’s Famous Philadelphia Cheesesteaks caught the interest of restaurateur, Steven Renner, the first time he dined at the dive back in early 2000.

“I walked out of Woody’s that day with a feeling in my gut that I had to have it,” Renner said. Persistently pursuing the thought of ownership for over ten years, Renner says he expressed interest on a monthly basis to Pastoria urging him to place a single call telling Renner that Woody’s was his.

Renner received that call last October and is now the new and proud owner of Woody’s. Enthused to be living out what Renner says is his life long dream, he plans on operating Wood’s for the next 35 years keeping it “as classic as it but with a few of his own spins.”

Upgrading the menu to include vegetarian options, additional items will be added to the menu to include hotdogs and sandwiches as well.

The space is getting what Renner is calling “spring cleaning:” new walls, ceiling, and floor. The equipment used will be the original from 1975 and the drive-in lane will become a pet friendly open-air patio with picnic tables and wood benches.

New operating hours will cater to the dinner and nightlife crowds: Sunday – Thursday, 11a.m. until 10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 a.m.

“You’ll be greeted with a smile, you’ll get your food fast and if you don’t like something, be sure to tell me and I’ll make it right.”

  1. I first visited Woody’s in 1981 and 1982 when I was working IT projects in Atlanta. I went there to grab lunch for my assistants many times. After I completed the Atlanta projects and moved on, I tried many times over the DECADES to remember the name where I found those AWESOME Philly’s and Hot Dogs but for the life of me, I could not remember anything except that it was on Monroe. I thought many times about just getting on Monroe and seeing if I could find it, but I never did.
Finally this evening… 38 years later (1/27/2020) … I positioned my web map on Monroe Avenue and began to slowly scroll from North to South. Then Yeaaaaaa, to my utter delight, I SAW IT…. Woody’s Cheesesteaks. I literally squealed with glee…. I live quite a distance away from Woody’s but I can tell you, it is worth it and I will be going back to Woody’s VERY SOON. My mouth is already watering. I have birthday coming up shortly so that might just very well be my treat to ME.
