Atlanta Historical Society, Inc. filed plans with the City of Atlanta this week to construct a new building at the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead to house the relocating Cyclorama exhibit. Construction of the 24,595-square-foot structure will cost an estimated $8,621,000.

The new space, called the Lloyd and Mary Ann Whitaker Cyclorama Building, will be located directly behind Veterans Park and connected to the Centennial Olympic Games Museum, according to the center’s website.

The Cyclorama exhibit is moving from Grant Park, where the Battle of Atlanta painting first went on display in 1893. It closed on June 30 for restoration and moving efforts, and the building will be converted to become part of Zoo Atlanta’s African Savanna exhibit.

The Atlanta History Center plans to reopen the Cyclorama in early 2017.
