Yep. Those scores are out of a possible 100 points.

Grody, right?

Taxco, located at 4500 Roswell Road, closed late December (story here) after their “Food Service Establishment Inspection Report” on Dec. 8 landed the restaurant a pathetic score of 63.

Anything below 70 is considered unacceptable, according to the Health Department.

Not confirmed, the restaurant was forced to close and renovate to keep the city from shuttering the business. In December 2009, the restaurant scored even lower, making a 58.

Some of the violations noted on the inspection form (digital copy here) include the following:

  1. Must provide employee health policy. New Violation.
  2. Must store food covered. Repeat Violation.
  3. Must maintain cold foods 41 and below. New Violation.
  4. Must date mark repackaged foods. New Violation.
  5. Must date mark repackaged foods. Repeat Violation.
  6. Must provide thermometers in all coolers. Repeat Violation.
  7. Must store wiping cloths in sanitizing solution. New Violation.
  8. Must protect single service items. New Violation.
  9. Must repair leaking water in reach in cooler. Repeat Violation.

And our personal favorite:

Must clean microwave.

Come on. Nobody wants to clean microwave crusties!

So did the restaurant clean up their act? Brave souls can find out tomorrow, when they reopen on Feb. 8– who’s hungry?

Out of curiosity, does anyone look at health inspection scores before visiting a restaurant? Would you be more likely to if they were made readily available?

  1. Wow!! I am so depressed reading this, and feel dumb for not noticing their health scores before. I generally always check a restaurant health score and will not eat there if its 80s or below.

This was my favorite Mexican joint, we even used them for a huge catering order, $500, because they had the best price. Now I know why.

  3. Taco Bell is more Mexican than this dump, ever notice Mexicans won’t even eat there? Atlanta loves bad food. Every Taco Bell scores a 98 or better, always but that doesn’t say much does it?

  4. The translation didn’t work very well…

those who put this information in the order are equibocados the investigators bad rating is a restaurant taxco establesida customers for over 30 years an never had any health problems they say that the problem was less one could be arranged in two or three days maximum but the whole restaurant renobar decided to give them the best of the best to customers all balla hopefully better for all … .. espesial mind to customers … … … … … … … … what happened was that the codes changed and also the superbisora We had never problems, but he seems to want the lemons decal that is fine but understand the establesimiento is the best obcion:

  5. I’m usually aware of the scores, but am a bit more forgiving, unless I’ve personally had an illness. I also love Taxco for their price and quick service.

I speak Spanish, and can translate the previous post, though it’s really broken Spanish (you can see that there’s no punctuation; the grammar and spelling aren’t very pretty either), so here goes my best effort…

“Those who posted this information about the investigators’ orders regarding bad quality are incorrect. For over 30 years, Taxco has been a restaurant with established clients, and has never had health problems. They say that the problem was minor and could be fixed in two or three days max, but decided to renovate the whole restaurant to give the patrons the best of the best. We hope that it’ll all be better for everyone, especially our patrons. What happened was that the codes changed and also the supervisor never had problems…” [very difficult to understand this next last part, so I won’t try]

For the poster, what exactly what were you trying to say in that last part? Or…CLIENTE — Que quiere decir en la parte final de su frase?

  6. I’ve been managing food establishments for a while and it can be difficult sometimes to stay on top of everything all the time. But these violations are pretty bad. No date marking? Not keeping food storage covered? No thermometers? Come on. That can lead to some pretty serious risks. I got a bad score once and it scared/embarrassed the crap out of me. Maintaining high standards for storing and preparing food properly and safely shows pride in your work and in your establishment. I hope they learned a valuable lesson.

  7. The newly renovated Taxco is great, as always excellent Mexican food at good prices and nice people too. Thanks for renovating and re-opening.
They have just gotten better. We ate there for years and no-one got sick anyway.

  8. I have eaten at Taxco pretty much since it opened back in the 80’s. I am usually pretty good about noticing inspection scores but I guess I missed this one. Honestly I don’t know if I can eat there anymore. I realize that Greg was saying that the inspection codes changed, but come on, that couldn’t have changed that much in order for you to score something so low. I think what did it for me was that the health inspector came in, gave them a 63 and then came in again at the end of the month and they scored lower! Really??? Honestly, I don’t think I have ever seen an inspection code so low in my life. Nasty. Anyways while Taxco was closed we found a new restaurant right down the street in the Publix shopping center. It is called Tacos and Tequilas and it is amazing! My husband had his 30th birthday there and they did such a great job!
