Owner DeeDee Niyomkul says Tamarind Seed will be closed for two years and reopen after Colony Square’s planned overhaul.

A spokesperson for North American Properties, the real estate firm behind the Colony Square redevelopment, in an email to What Now Atlanta Wednesday said there’s a “possibility” the Thai restaurant could return to the development.

“Part of the process means making way for new tenants, including the space currently occupied by Tamarind Seed, which will close its doors on Sept. 1. The owners will focus on their other locations, and look forward to the possibility of returning to the reimagined Colony Square.”

The restaurant has been a Midtown staple since 2007.

It’s unclear what other tenants might be displaced during construction but demolition could start any day now.

A permit application early August was filed with City of Atlanta to demo a two-story building at the Midtown development.

The “reimagined” Colony Square will break ground this fall and deliver the first phase in July 2018.

“We are in the process of curating a best-in-class merchandise mix, and outfitting the future Colony Square with chef-driven eateries, boutique entertainment, fitness concepts and market responsive retailers,” the spokesperson said.

“During the redevelopment process, we are launching several initiatives to bring inspired food activations, pop-up experiences and events to Colony Square, including food trucks and a partnership with Fooda. Soon, we will have more exciting news to announce about the culinary transformation coming to Colony Square…”

Niyomkul and her family—operators of Nan Fine Dining, Tamarind Seed, and Tuk Tuk Thai Food Loft—in the meantime will focus on Chai Yo, a new Buckhead concept.

The Thai restaurant is taking over the former J. Christopher’s space in Two Buckhead Plaza as first reported by WNA in February.

Chai Yo is joining restaurants like Seasons 52, Umi, Chops Lobster Bar, and King + Duke in the development.

Atlanta Magazine has more details on Chai Yo here.
