Shipfeifer On Peachtree Sank After Nearly 35 Years. Is There Rumi For Sufi’s To Succeed?

Sufi’s Kitchen is opening next door to R. Thomas Deluxe Grill in the old Shipfeifer On Peachtree space at 1814 Peachtree Street in Buckhead.

Slated to open by the end of summer, the space (owned by The Shumacher Group) is currently boarded up. Sources at R. Thomas say construction has begun.

Prior to leasing the space to Sufi’s Kitchen, research indicates that Shipfeifer of Athens Inc., said owner of Shipfeifer On Peachtree, tried to open a Gyro Wrap to replace Shipfeifer .

With building permits in place, the reasons for failing to open Gyro Wrap are unknown. Shipfeifer of Athens Inc. owns other Gyro Wrap franchise locations.

Specific details on Sufi’s Kitchen are still unidentified and several “news sources” indicated that the new eatery was going to be called “Soufi’s,” including The Shumacher Group who posted about the lease signing here.

Sufi’s Kitchen will be serving Persian fare according to The Shumacher Group. Less this turn into a crash course in History, we did conduct some light research (thank you Google and Mica P.) to try and make an educated guess on what Sufi’s Kitchen might be serving.

Here’s what we found on Sufi and Sufism (Islamic mysticism) from Serving A Guest — A Sufi Cookbook:

The 15th Century poet Kabir, whose Sufism represented a fusion of principles from both the Islamic and Hindu traditions, unequivocally condemned meat eating, characterizing it as the ultimate failure of compassion, deserving of eternal punishment; he stated that even the companionship of meat-eaters was harmful to the soul.

What’s the verdict? Our guess is Vegetarian.

  1. I loved Shipfeifer’s food but their service was horrible. They just couldn’t seem to ever get a good wait staff going there.

  2. I don’t think Sufi will be a vegetarian restaurant; I don’t think there is such a thing as a “Vegetarian Persian Restaurant…” Also, Sufi’s were not vegetarian, if there were any vegetarian Sufi’s, it must have been that they were vegetarians Hindus before they became Sufi’s (which is really not a religion, it is more a way of life).

  3. We just had lunch at Sufi’s and despite their lack of a liquor license -which seems to be a typical ordeal for new restaurants in Atlanta- it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Overall, everything was delicious, maybe except for the side salad could use some attention; the gyro-like wraps might benefit from a more tzitziki like sauce as the current side sauce is a little overwhelming to the subtle chicken flavors. Recommends are the bread, hummus, dolmas, the Persion stew (the one with pomegranate), and the chicken wrap. We found the portions to be on the generous side. I loved! Shipfeifer’s, but it should have long ago been euthanized. Sufi’s is already a welcome addition to that little strip of restaurants.

  4. It’s been open maybe two weeks now… We’ve been there FOUR times!!
Does that tell you anything? And the hubby is Persian, so we KNOW what
Persian food should taste like, and this is the real thing. Great food,
great ambiance, great service and reasonable$$. Midtown… Get out your
    Napkins!

  5. There’s a Sufi’s kitchen in Sandy Springs that rocks. The fare (Persian) features grilled meats, superfresh vegetables, exotic and unusual spices. I hope this is as good.
