Restaurants that receive a score of 70 or less (out of 100) on its health inspection is failing, according to the Fulton County Environmental Health Services Department.

In September, Steak and Shake, at 3380 Northside Parkway, was the only Fulton business to receive a failing score. As devoted fans and critics of our failed health inspections column, it is rare to have just one failure in a sea of 130 plus inspections.

Are Fulton county restaurants cleaning up their act? In August there was only one failure as well — Midtown gay bar Burkhart’s.

  1. I ate at this location in early-September and was surprised how bad it was…and not just the food which is usually pretty tasty. For years the place had been dependable, consistent, tidy and always made a much, much better than McDonald’s burger…though this visit at 11Am on a Saturday morning, both the restaurant, the operation and the food was a disappointing mess. Also, the dining room was a disaster. Only three tables in the dining room had customers and at least 90% of the rest were empty, though they each were covered with dirty dishes from previous diners. No bus-person in sight. There was only one (obvious) server in the dining room, one cook at the grille, three standing around talking by the Coke machine looking puzzled when I walked in and sat down at the counter (taking 5+ minutes to even approach me) and the rest working the drive-through and not ever looking at the rest of the operation. Part of the small, 3-4 seat counter was obviously being used as the manager/supervisor’s workspace which for me is a big turn off seeing supervision working in the public spaces. Also, their freezer door was ajar for 30+ minutes I was at the counter and the backdoor was wide open. Did I mention the four flies that were having a a great time buzzing around the kitchen, dining room and food prep area? The restaurant was recently remodeled. It seems to me that what they really need is a re-do from top to bottom starting with their cleanliness, supervision, operational and food handling procedures. I won’t be back until they “clean-up” their act. What a disappointment!
