Empty Space.

Space Modern, a furniture store located at 805 Peachtree Street in midtown, is said to be closing July 15 after nearly 10 years in business.

Apart from the massive block lettering informing onlookers of their “40 percent to 80 percent off everything” sale, a sign posted on the door informs customers of their “special summer hours,” and “by appointment only” Sundays.

Insiders suggest that they have been on “borrowed time” with the landlord on rent and have lost many of the lines they used to carry due mainly in part to late payment and missed bills to suppliers.

When Space Modern’s owners were asked why the showroom was so empty, their claim was that they were in the process of relocating to west midtown (presumably the design district).

No documents have been filed with the city that supports this claim. Either way, all signs point in the direction of soon to be, empty space; something Atlanta is becoming all too familiar with.

  1. This place was aweful and I’m glad they are out of business! I had the worst experience ever when I bought a piece of furniture from them in 2005. I bought the piece in November 2005 but it did not get installed unitl summer of 2006! They gave me excuse after excuse for the delays. I normally do not wish bad things to businesses but in this case I am smiling ear to ear

  2. THE BIGGEST CROOKS IN TOWN.
TIM, the owner is a liar and should be ashamed of himself. A talented perosn but definitely a liar.
My clients order was fowled up after years.

I hope he NEVER shows his face in town. He is THIEF and this is a small city and I hope everyone knows never to do business with this creep.

    FIND A NEW CITY TIM!

  3. Yikes, so harsh. I wonder if any of you know what it takes to run a small business. I’ve seen many successful projects / interiors produced by Space. Atlanta is lucky to have unique and celebrated talent.

  4. Reading these blogs reminds me that some people truly have no idea what is important in life. Instead of being grateful for life and our health, some people still find it necessary to comment about things that are of no importance to them. As far as I am concerned, John and Jocelyn, your comments come from a view of an uneducated and hateful person. If you did not feel bad about yourself when you posted that, there is something wrong with you.

Space on the other hand has been a successful pioneer in this industry. The talents of Space have been recognized on a national level. The design work and beautiful products that have been delivered from
Space have been like no other in this city. It is difficult for people to understand where the vision of Space comes from, but if you visit a showroom in NYC, or better yet in Europe, you will understand.

I wish Space the best! I really am not sure what your next step will be, but I am and always will be a supporting fan!

  5. That’s more bad news in a tough economy. The Midtown Design District will definitely lose something special when SPACE leaves the neighborhood. SPACE’s style and windows will be missed on Peachtree Street!

  6. I am very sad to see that SPACE is closing. It has been a bright spot in the Midtown area for 10 years with a great and innovative vision. I will especially miss the talents of Tim Hobby and his unique expression of design and art with SPACE’s window displays. They truly would make me smile every time I drove by the store. I’m sure whatever the future holds, the idea and promise of a unique and modern esthetic in our homes and businesses will continue to be something that is expressed from the staff of SPACE! Good Luck and God be with us All!

  7. While Tim has some nice design sense, he really has no customer service or business skills beyond taking a payment. I personally ordered furniture that too way too long to arrive. I would call and leave messages and speak to some employees, but never hear back. On the rare chance I would actually speak to Tim I would get a plethora of excuses on why my furniture has not arrived, none of which seem to be Space’s fault. I assure you I was not the only one in this position. Yes, I do have a bone to pick with Space and what they did to me and my family personally (and I assure you it was not just a single occasional chair I was waiting on), but this is bad business, bad business that effects peoples lives.

To those of you who say Space will be missed. Have you looked to the store lately? Have you or do you feel comfortable purchasing furniture from them? It’s an empty shell of a store. I can’t recall the last time the store looked complete, or when a proper window display was even done. Design sense is one thing, but when you burn so many people, they don’t return, and business suffers.

  8. Despite the success of the store at one time, and despite the design value to Atlanta, Tim became a crook – there is no way around this. He took money from individuals, supposedly to be applied to their order, but instead applied it to overhead, and then eventually other people’s orders, never being able to dig himself out of the hole. Robbing from Paul to pay Peter, and eventually it caught up to him. While it is sad, he literally stole thousands of dollars from people. Just ask any one of the individuals on the list of people who had paid him in full or in part for an order he never placed with his overseas vendors despite what he said… Wake up – regardless of intentions, this is fraud and was a crime — and now he’ll get to hide behind the “closed business” door.

  9. THANK GOD! the endless trail of “victims” can finally end. i’m sure there is a t-shirt out there somewhere that says, “i got screwed by space and all i got was this lousy shirt and it took me 6 months to get it!”

  10. I don’t know how he can show his face in town.
He is a cynical crook that most of the design community knows about.
The buzz at Industry events is how nobody wants any part of him.
His ethics all came to light.
He is horrible and should just Atlatna…nobody want him here.

  11. Wow! Obviously… the negative comments come from uneducated people who have No clue what it takes to run a small business.

  12. Hmmm! I have known Tim since he worked at Innovations. He is a great designer. I personally spent thousand upon thousands with him, he was always up front with me and explained custom furniture coming from Italy could not be here overnight. I knew what to expect and was not disappointed. I worked with him on deign and we were published in Atlanta Magazine. I truly believe it was the economy and someone hanging on to their dream by any means. Survival
