Slater Hospitality has become the latest heavy-hitter partner to join Newport RE‘s much-anticipated revival of South Downtown. The investment firm announced today that Slater will open a new rooftop restaurant and cocktail lounge at 222 Mitchell, a historic, mixed-use development and the largest holding within Newport’s revitalization efforts.

Slated to open in summer 2023, the restaurant will be a modern diner complemented by its cocktail lounge counterpart. Providing an idyllic backdrop for impressive skyline views, the diner will lean into its classic persona with a modern twist. Guests can expect a well-executed culinary menu with favorites faithful to its heritage plus dialed-up nostalgia with a pie bar display and indulgent, over-the-top desserts.

The adjacent cocktail lounge, set to offer a vibrant nightlife scene with an exclusive feel, will serve elevated bar classics amongst luxurious interior finishes and plush seating. Names for the forthcoming concepts have yet to be announced.

“222 Mitchell has been vacant for 20 years, and this exciting partnership with Slater is helping bring back to life this part of our city so marked by history and culture,” said April Stammel, Senior Vice President of Newport. “I can’t wait to share with Atlantans how much of that will shine through Slater’s concepts, placing 222 into the narrative of what makes Atlanta so special and different.”

Founder and CCO of Slater Hospitality, Mandy Slater, echoed Stammel’s excitement saying the project is exactly what downtown needs. “We love what South Downtown is becoming, and even more so the fact that we have the opportunity to be an integral part of the transformation,” Slater said.

Slater Hospitality is also bringing its Pizza Clementine and basement cocktail bar, Thirteenth Floor, across the street to Hotel Row. “All of our experiences are conceptualized and developed for their distinct area of town and what we feel it’s missing. We are excited to unveil these new offerings to the city we love so much,” said Slater.

With exciting retail, restaurant and entertainment concepts and mixed-use spaces planned, the 333,000-square-foot Mitchell Street development will certainly breathe new life into one of downtown Atlanta’s most significant city blocks. Newport, however – along with each thoughtfully curated tenant and partner – is committed to keeping community and culture in mind while dually re-energizing the scene with a highly activated and connected street level, office and rooftop experience.

Slater is a leading creator of experiential rooftop projects across Atlanta including Ponce City Market’s theme park and restaurant, as well as the forthcoming resort-style rooftop for the Interlock in West Midtown.

The group’s concepts for South Downtown will be joined by an equally impressive line-up of hospitality trailblazers such as bowling alley and bar, Pins Mechanical Company, and fried chicken joint, How Crispy.
