Historic District Shopping Center in Inman Park slated for redevelopment. Tenants plan for relocation.

UPDATE (August 24, 2011): Landlord spending 150K to demolish Historic District Shopping Center on Decatur Street

Historic District Shopping Center is scheduled to be redeveloped, according to Spencer Humphrey, owner of Black Tie Barbecue, one of the shopping center’s tenants.

The shopping center at 486 Decatur Street, which was built in 1965, will be redeveloped into self-storage, Humphrey told What Now Atlanta in a telephone interview Saturday.

“Decatur Street Properties is knocking down the building and constructing a self-storage unit,” Humphrey said. “We kind of knew this day was going to come.”

Humphrey, who opened his catering company, Black Tie Barbecue, at the shopping center in May 2010, is relocating along with the rest of the Historic District’s tenants, he said.

“We have a buyout on our lease,” Humphrey said. “We’ll move as soon as we find a new location.”

Humphrey said he hopes to find space near Black Tie’s current location and plans on adding a “showroom” element to the new space.

“The only downside is we’ll need to come up with more money to fund the build-out and other expenses associated with moving.”

Decatur Street Properties and other Historic District tenants were not immediately available for comment.

  1. I live just down the street, and while I’m happy this wreck of a “shopping center” will be gone, a self-storage unit is no better! This is a bigger let-down than the dialysis clinic down the street.

  2. This is a terrible use of the property so close to the Beltline, Marta Station, Historic District, Edgewood Avenue district, etc. I know the housing/condo market is terrible, but this would have made a good spot for offices.

  3. It’s not done yet. The NPU-M land use committee voted against approving the variation requests of the owner, who is seeking a variation from the BeltLine Overlay District requirement of active use in the first 20ft. By visiting https://aca.accela.com/Atlanta_Ga/Default.aspx and entering case BL-11-022, you can track the process.

  4. Now when you read the crime reports you can hear about all the poor folks getting their storage units broken into. If it happens all the time on Cheshire Bridge, it”ll definitely happen at this location. First month free isn’t such a great deal when everything gets stolen on the second.

  6. I am part of The Village Theatre and we too are fully aware of Decatur Street Properties’ plans to tear down the building. Just wanted to let our fans know we will be announcing our new location shortly! In the meantime, we will still be performing at 486 Decatur Street. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or visit us at villagecomedy.com for updates!

  7. This area will continue to struggle as long as it is infested by so many chronically homeless people, enabled by samaritan house, jefferson place and oddyssey.

  8. DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE…

I am one of the owners from the Village Theatre…Yes it is true our beloved old building is being torn down. Yes it looks like we will be moving. However we have not chosen a spot as of yet (we are close and some rumors are true). We are looking at multiple spaces in the Atlanta area and hope to announce soon where our new home will be. We do know that the new space will have more seating, be safer than our current home and we will have a beer and wine bar. I like to thank all the fans of the Village Theatre that have seen our shows over the last three years and promise them our new home will be cooler, safer and the shows as crazy and funny.

  9. I’ve only been to the Village Theatre once but had a great time (and I forgot to bring my Groupon which was ok since you got more money out of the deal this way). Hope you find a new location quickly.

  10. That’s a good news for storage facility would be available near the town but still this would be great shock for the owners to move. I do believe that the breakin would be stopped like the other safe self storage rockford in the state. So I don’t think there should be worry about the theft. Myths everywhere but the truth will reveal itself as the new location would be selected and move will be done.
