When Smoothie King called it quits (story here) at their prime location on the corner of 10th and Piedmont in Midtown just two months ago, Atlantan’s sat anxiously awaiting a replacement that was worthy of the neighborhood. With a quick turnaround on securing the space, Repicci’s Real Italian Ice opened expediently and was in operation just before the end of summer.

In anticipation of an actual neighborhood dessert spot, hopes were high. But like a skydiver whose rip cord malfunctions, this new ice cream joint has already taken an extreme nose dive. All we can do is sit and wait for the splat.

Our take:

    1. This wanna be cool spot is as cheesy as the fruit graphics plastered all over the windows. Pair that with the neon open sign, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for tacky.

    1. We’ve never seen ice cream sweat before, but at Repicci’s, even the ice cream looks anxious.

    1. Don’t try ordering something that is not on the menu, because that simply isn’t possible for check-out purposes. For example, the “Gelati” can ONLY come with soft served and not “Gelato.”

    1. The atmosphere is simple uninviting. Nothing says, “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream,” quite like an ice cream shop that’s the size of a closet and is 20 degrees warmer than it should be (that explains why the ice cream was sweating).

  1. Oh, and their “gelato” tastes like $hit.

Midtown is still without a dessert shop. Go talk to the folks at Chocolate Pink down the road and they’ll tell you the same thing.

  1. I thought this site was about events and happenings in the business community, not a place for petty complaints. You should go to yelp for that.

You are definitely out of line. This site is becoming a joke. Congrats, you are now officially “FOODIE BUDDHA JR.”

  2. I would really like to see a frozen yogurt place open in Midtown. It would do really well – what is taking so long?!

  3. I have to agree with you about the stupid FRUIT GRAPHICS on the window. You can’t even really see inside and doesn’t make you think “italian ice” or “ice cream” or “gelato”!

  4. I was in the area after seven years having left the Big Apple due to death of my father…I saw the Gelato Signs and I was overwhelmed with a big huge smile on my face and eyebrows raised when I ran into Rapicci’s I am so upset to see the hate comments, I cant disagree more. I had a special spot in the 14th Union Square Location where I frequented for Gelato. I am so happy to say the least Rapicci’s Tiramasu was The very best I’ve tasted in fact I purchase the larger version. I recommend the shop highly and the staff was so Awesome and I was made very welcome and I did not want to leave. I definitely think that you obviously have a personal problem stating the untasteful comments which is low class to say the least this is a Community page to build our communities finest and not tear them down watching too much Jerry Springer? Careful those type medias have a negative effect on you didnt you know?

  5. @Jack Trent
uh, watching the slow death of a venus is an event/happening in the community too, ya know.

and what’s up with y’all telling Caleb what his website should be? I believe he’s doing a damn good job figuring that out for himself.

  6. Mixed feelings here from an OTP’er…

On one hand, why kick somebody when they’re down.

On the other hand, a business owner needs to hear the hard facts if they want their business to grow, even if they don’t want to hear it, they should and take heed. Because at least here, the business operator can see what the problem is and try to fix it. There are probably many customers who have left thinking the same thing but haven’t shared it with the business. A business can do a lot to help image by being sure to search online for complaints and respond. For instance, if the writer of What Now Atlanta was approached by the owner or manager of the shop and offered a return visit and an apology for a less-than-adequate experience, that would go a long way. The owner/manage could also post a comment here to explain. Maybe it was a one-time air conditioning issue.

I say you go in there and give them another chance – perhaps even make 3 visits and if 2 out of 3 visits are bad, then get snarky.

  7. Are the selling ice cream, or italian ice? A difference exists you know. While it sounds like this business needs to make some improvements, this article is non-professional to put it nicely. And it’s not at all humorous if that’s what you were going for.

  8. I’m shocked this place is still open (despite their attempts at good publicity by posting fake Yelp 5-star reviews on Yelp).

  9. the gelato was the best I ever tasted. maybe the space was warm because it is so tiny and it has all those freezers plugged in. anyway, you should try it again before you get all negative about it. I had the maple bacon gelato once and the tiramisu another time. No problem. maybe yours is just a personal thing.
