Georgia State University and its development partner Carter USA are deep in the throes of a multi-phase revitalization of Turner Field (now operating as Georgia State Stadium) and the surrounding areas, including sections of the Summerhill neighborhood, south of I-20.
Once complete, the 72-acre redevelopment could include +/- 350,000 square feet of retail, 900,000 square feet of office, 965 multifamily units, and student housing with 675 beds.
What Now Atlanta this week obtained renderings of “Summerhill Apartments,” a portion of the multifamily planned for the project.
Summerhill Apartments, designed by Smith Dalia, could be built in at least two phases, according to site plans for the redevelopment.
South Block could offer 120 of the planned 965 units joined by 24,000 square feet of office and 20,000 square feet of retail, situated on the corner of Fraser Street and Georgia Avenue.
North Block, an additional 325 units, could be joined by 20,000 square feet of retail, bound by Hank Arron Drive to the west, Crumley Street to the north, Fraser Street to the east, and Glenn Street to the south.
Smith Dalia representatives were not immediately available to comment on the project.
Summerhill Apartments could be developed first along Georgia Avenue to coincide with the redevelopment’s Phase I which calls for the conversion of “crumbling structures” along the corridor into retail and restaurants.
First to open along Georgia Avenue as early as fall 2018 could be Halfway Crooks Brewing and Blending, “Georgia’s first own-premise” brewery (it will both craft and serve its suds on-site.)
Next could be Hodgepodge Coffeehouse, slated to open on the corner of Georgia Avenue and Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard in mid-2019.
Other secured concepts for the redevelopment include Wood’s Chapel BBQ and Talat Market.
