The downtown University got approvals Wednesday to buy and redevelop the former home of The Atlanta Braves for nearly $53 million, according to a microsite dedicated to the forthcoming project.

“The Board of Regents approved Georgia State University’s purchase of the property from the Georgia State University Foundation,” the timeline section of the website notes.

“Georgia State will pay the foundation $22.8 million for its portion of the 67-acre site. The sale allows the university to move forward with its plan to renovate and reuse the stadium.”

The University is looking to convert the existing baseball stadium into a football stadium for The Panthers as a part of an overall $300 million redevelopment of Turner Field into a campus expansion, mixed-use development.

The University Thursday is expected to solicit a Request For Qualifications (RFQ) from interested contractors and short-list those contractors by December 12, and ownership of the property should be transferred by December 31.

Georgia State plans to begin construction February  2017.
