Site Solutions recently published renderings and project details for The Point Park, one of the “centerpieces” planned as part of the redevelopment of Alpharetta’s North Point Mall. Site Solutions was commissioned to prepare the Master Plan for the park, the company writes on its website.

“Overshadowed by a re-energized downtown and by the success of Avalon and its surroundings, the City of Alpharetta, through a Livable Cities Initiative Grant, began studies to revitalize the area around the thirty-year-old North Point Mall and its surrounding commercial areas,” Site Solutions writes of the in-progress redevelopment. Mall Owner Brookfield Development plans to replace a portion of the mall with mixed-use housing, restaurants, and community open space. Adjacent to it will be a 14-acre recessed open space park and stormwater detention area — the center of the new “North Point Eco District.”

Features of The Point Park include a Canopy Walk that starts at street grade and traverses the recessed tree canopy, an Amphitheater, a steel-structured overlook, a fishing boardwalk, picnic pavilions, open space, and trails. “Careful attention is paid to wetlands restoration, art integration, inclusivity, ADA issues, and programmable spaces that are flexible with community needs,” Site Solutions writes.

In addition to the Canopy Walk, The Point Park would offer a pedestrian bridge that spans the park, linking the new housing and commercial core at the North Point Mall site with the development parcels on the park’s far side, including transit stops on North Point Parkway and trails that link it to the Big Creek Greenway.

Brookfield Development on Monday did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The real estate firm was supposed to break ground on the North Point Mall redevelopment in late-2019, early 2020. In June Brookfield filed a “modification of zoning conditions” application with the City of Alpharetta to change its required groundbreaking timeline to February 2022 at the latest, although it will likely move the project forward before then.

“Due to the onslaught of COVID-19 and the financial uncertainty which it has endangered, Brookfield requires relief from one of the timing requirements imposed by the 29 conditions imposed upon the approval of these applications,” according to the filing. “Brookfield remains committed to redevelop this site as contemplated by the original approval. However, current economic uncertainty might make the earlier timetable impossible to observe.”
