[Rendering] Greyhound To Build New Bus Terminal Downtown

Across four phases a new bus station will rise from the ground up as existing terminal gets demolished, becomes parking.

Greyhound is planning on upgrading its downtown intercity bus station, at 232 Forsyth St. SW. The transport company will build a new terminal as shown in the above rendering from the ground up, according to a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a General Contractor for the project.

The project is partially funded with Federal Transit Administration grant funds administered by the Georgia Department of Transportation and will take place across four phases, according to the RFP.

Phase One calls for the construction of the new terminal with the project’s final phase being the demolition of Greyhound’s existing downtown terminal which will make way for a new parking area.

It’s unclear when the project will break ground but construction bids are currently being accepted through August 26, 2020. Greyhound on Friday did not immediately respond to What Now Atlanta’s request for comment.

Niles Bolton Associates is the architect of record for the forthcoming terminal.

[Editor’s note: an earlier version of this article incorrectly listed a General Contractor (GC). A GC has not yet been selected for this project.]

  1. Well that rendering sure puts the ‘grey’ in Greyhound.
I really like the style of the building though!
I’ve never traveled on a Greyhound bus– I bet it would be an interesting experience.

    1. I’ve done it once, never again if I can help it. How many passengers can you get on a bus in the age of social distancing?

      1. I have a friend who would take the bus from Atlanta back home to Alabama.
He said it was really sketchy.

    2. It’s been Long over due for Downtown Atlanta to get a New Greyhound bus station. The Greyhound terminal in Memphis Tennessee & St. Louis are Really Nice & modern. I Hope they make the Atlanta station nice and Large and Modern with All the Gates for all the distination points and proper seating and a restaurant. Not that hot dog stand crap. I used to ride Greyhound back in the 80s as a kid and Greyhound was WAY BETTER BACK THAN THEN NOW. They had bus stations and not useing truck stops for a bus station and a lot of the big city terminals had Burger Kings in them and or a Restaurant. It was considered a meal stop when a bus would come and passengers had a 30 to 1 hour stop, you go in and get a meal while the service guys would service the bus. Sweep clean, mop and dump the toilet water & refresh toilet with water all at the gate or they drive it to the greyhound service garage. Get back on and it would smell Good. They used Hot shot liquid in the mop water and in the toilet water, had the whole bus smelling fresh and you would smell it in the ac vents as the air blew. Hot shot was a blue liquid in Huge containers. I wish today I could find some of it. Pour it in mop water and or toilet water and it smell the whole place up. Good sent. Bubble gum was the sent. But yeah greyhound buses are even ugly. Bring back the Red white & blue. I think Europeans own it now. And half the time the bus stations have no baggage handlers, u carry your own to the bus and if you change buses you get orf and go to the side of the bus & get your bag and take it inside terminal to the next gate, then go to the new bus and the handler would put it on at the side. Back in the days, if ya change buses they switch it from bus to bus for you. And most bus stations had restaurants in them. Beckley w, va, Nashville, Memphis, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Birmingham And the old Atlanta terminal had Burger King. Columbus Ohio and Pittsburgh & Birmingham all had burger kings. Yes I Hope greyhound gets bought back & becomes American owned and go back to the Quality service that they Used to have. Stop being cheap and build or rent bus stations. Even the small towns back then had bus stations. Not useing truck stops or gas stations for a ticket counter. The Atlanta station needs to be state of the art, Atlanta is a large city and needs a terminal that has plenty of walk room and a place to service the buses when they come in, sweep mop & clean, refreshing, fuel center at the gate or build a service garage across the lot like Columbus Ohio had. Hire baggage handlers so when people come in change buses they check what bags go where on the next bus. Not the passenger go and get there own bag and then take it to the next bus. Have tickets counter with at least 5 counters. With agents at each one. Have tv. In the passenger waiting area. Lockers, two security officers to keep the idiots in check. And a nice sit down restaurant. And a decent intercom so when they call your bus you can hear them loud & clearly, the gate the stops along the way and final distination the bus is going and the connection points and where they goin. That’s how it used to be on greyhound. And please keep the rift raft out. The locals that come in begging and lottering.

      1. Interesting post, I really enjoyed it!
Long distance travel was so different back in the day. People used to dress up to go on an airplane etc. Air travel used to be a very elegant affair– now look at it…

I think when air travel became more affordable, for the average person, companies like Greyhound/Amtrak lost a lot of their customer base. And when a company loses money, a lot of amenities get dropped. I’m not sure the bus or airline experience will ever be the way some of us remember it– and it probably doesn’t need to.

It sounds like you did a lot of traveling with Greyhound. I enjoyed your comment, and it made me feel fond of something that I never experienced myself! However, I don’t think I’d enjoy the bubblegum scent of the cleaner that was used, LOL.

  2. Almost forgot about this project, but glad its survived the pandemic. I do like the look of it so it’ll be be a nice addition for the area

      1. It was during a downtown neighborhood meeting, really just letting people know it was a thing that was happening. I don’t think I ever saw it online anywhere.

  3. Its interesting that they are constructing a GreyHound Specific station with Government funds. Birmingham, AL just built a very nice Bus Transit Center with Grey Hound, MegaBus, and Several others including their in-town transit system… all complete with digital transit boards like airports, side walk cafes, coffee shops, etc.

  4. Greyhound has lost its appeal to the passenger on a budget. These days it wouldn’t be very practical to be on a bus for several days when there are cheaper fares on airlines to cater to your needs and get you to your destination in a matter of hours and not several days.
