Regal Entertainment Group is bringing 4DX technology to at least one of its auditoriums in Regal Atlantic Station Stadium 16 IMAX, RPX & VIP.

A 4DX representative Thursday confirmed the news with What Now Atlanta in a telephone interview after a permit was uncovered for a “remodel” of the Atlantic Station cinema.

The technology, developed by CJ 4DPLEX, delivers an “immersive multisensory cinematic experience,” incorporating onscreen visuals with synchronized motion chairs and environmental effects such as water, wind, fog, scent, snow and more—much like a theme-park 4D attraction.

The theater is expected to open early 2018, according to the 4DX representative.

Plans to convert at least one of the Regal Atlantic Station auditoriums into a 4DX Theater were filed earlier this week with the City of Atlanta.

An estimated $1,700,000 could be spent on the conversion.

Regal in 2016 announced plans to bring the technology to 17 screens in “key” U.S. markets.

“The result is that 4DX, going beyond 3D, adds visual, aural, olfactory and tactile dimensions to the film-viewing experience, and lends itself perfectly to high-energy movies,” according to the announcement.

  1. There’s no way I’m paying extra to watch films in 4D only with RPX or IMAX. As most people already know, the real IMAX Theater can only be found at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. They should consider bringing this to Phipps Plaza in Buckhead considering how nice that theater is!
