It’s Tough To Stay Afloat In A Shopping Center That’s Lost At Sea.

So it’s no surprise that Pirate’s Pub, located at 3979 Buford Highway in the Crossroads Village Shopping Center, has closed.

Having celebrated their grand opening in September of 2009, Pirate’s Pub barely made it to their one year anniversary. Though the exact date of closure is unsure, sources indicate their last night in business was this past Friday, October 8.

“This restaurant is closed,” is printed in block lettering on the main entrance followed by, “inquires: Jerry @ 770.899.0977.”

A separate sheet reads, “Much thanks to all our friends and customers for all their support this past year. It was sure great knowing and serving all of you. The staff of Pirate’s Pub.”

Our assumption is they lost their booty because they opened in a shopping center that’s lacking in tenants. Crossroads Village Shopping Center, which is anchored by Aldi Grocery, has about as much traffic as the open seas.

When visiting the site to confirm closure, we were surprised to find a patron would approach the pub every few minutes in upset to find them closed (they’re were open till midnight daily)– a confirmation that this eatery might have been worth its weight in gold for locals.

With Pirate’s Pub gone, the reopened Havana Restaurant (burned down a few years ago on Buford Highway at North Druid Hills) now sits alone surrounded by windows displaying “For Lease” signs. Are they next to go?

  1. yes, it is sad that pirates pub has closed. i’ve know jerry for many years from Fuzzys. whatever reason the didn’t make it, can’t really blame it all on the shopping center. As far as Havana, we are doing great, our regulars from Buford and N, druid hills have found us, plus many new “friends” are getting their cuban fix taken care of! We are not going anywhere, as a matter of fact looking at Havana2 to open by early summer 2011!

  2. I walked into the Pirate Pub one day for lunch, got a whiff of stale cigarette smoke…and promptly went next door to Havana and had a great meal.

  3. I live in a neighborhood very close by, and was excited when the place opened, as it would have been great to have a pub within walking distance. My wife and I went once, and were disappointed.

When I think of a pub, I think of a place with several great beers on tap, and cheap specialty pub food. Not sure why they called themselves a pub — they had a couple standard beers on tap (Bud, Bud Light, Yuengling), and the food was expensive. The opposite of a pub, really.

We continue to go to Havana next door for good food. I don’t foresee them having the same problem, so I disagree with your assessment that they closed due to lack of tenants in the area. I say they closed due to calling themselves a pub, yet not delivering on being one.

  4. Actually their last night was Sunday, Oct. 3rd. I was there and
went back on Monday and they were gone. It’s sad really, I liked
these people, Jerry, Annie, Melody, Jamie and Sadie. Jeff is a nice
guy as well. As for the health score, eh.. I’ve eaten at many a place
on Buford Highway with probably worse. Hey Skreet, it’s easy to kick
someone when they’re down. Be glad you never spent any time there,
you most likely would have been kicked quite a bit.

    1. Does you know how to get in touch with Melody? She was always my waitress at Fuzzy’s and was the best. After Fuzzy’s closed I found her at Pirate’s Pub, talked with her for a while and promised to return. Unfortunately, when I came back a few weeks later, the place was closed.

  5. Don’t forget the poor service. When you have the owners drunk wife serving patrons its never a good thing.

  6. “Be glad you never spent any time there,
you most likely would have been kicked quite a bit.”
Um, Rick…what on earth does that mean? It sounds like this restaurant was poorly run, didn’t pass inspection and failed miserably. End of story.

  7. wow. I went one day and saw the sign, and was crushed, as I adored the place AND the people who owned/ran it. I knew them from back in the days of Fuzzy’s on North Druid Hills Road, any time I stopped in it was like going to visit some old friends. They say perception is everything, it is amazing to me how my perception of Pirates Pub is so vastly different from the comments of others. I was ALWAYS pleased with the food, the service, the ambiance. I didn’t expect a 5 star experience, just a friendly neighborhood place to sit and have lunch and relax, and Pirates Pub delivered, with out fail.

Save the snarky comments, please. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, these are mine.

  8. Please let us know if they reopen! The food was great,
A lot us really loved it especially if you loved Fuzzys

  9. Agree, Terry, Denise and friends. They were good people
who got caught up with some financial backers who were not
willing to give it enough time. Melody is still having health
problems. There is a benefit for her tonight at Benchwarmers
starting around 4. Gifts are welcome but since she lost her
insurance, cash donations would be most welcome.

  10. Rick, I’m sorry i hadn’t checked this email account in a while and am just now seeing this, I’d love to have gone and seen Melody, been able to contribute something. I was unaware of the behind the scenes issues of backers, all I know is that they are good people, I enjoyed going there and giving them my business. I am only sorry i was not able to go more often.

and once more, this is MY opinion, everyone is entitled to theirs, I’m not interested in any snarky comments.

  11. Ethiopian Restaurant/ Lounge will be opening up in that shopping center at the end of May. Very Upscale Lounge

  12. Princess, no, it is not karma. The partner who opened the Pirates Pub fired no one, did no one wrong. They were good people who opened in a lousy time, in a not so good location, under financed. But if it makes your day to think it was karma …what ever.
