“Your Park Is Breaking Ground.” Finally.

Originally scheduled to open by early 2010, a 53-Acre expansion at Piedmont Park in Midtown has been pushed to early November 2010 according to former Mayor Shirley Franklin, a strong advocate and unofficial spokeswoman for the park’s expansion.

Increasing the overall park space by another 53-Acres, this expansion will nearly double the park’s size. Keeping in concept with the original design of the park, new features include the following: public skate park, basketball courts, interactive fountain (similar to the Centennial Olympic Park fountain), restaurant and kiosk space, additional picnic and pavilion areas, expanded parking, an outdoor classroom, more public restrooms, a third playground with a carousel, expanded hiking trails and athletic fields.

Plans also call for a new entrance further down on Piedmont avenue near the recently opened HobNob restaurant. A designated formal garden as well as a community garden and orchard will be constructed at a later date.

Check out this video detailing the project, compliments of the Piedmont Park Conservancy:

With a budget of $41 million dollars, it will bring a much needed gateway to Piedmont Park for the Ansley Mall area residents and be a catalyst for the Beltline project that is set to run through the middle of the park.
