Rolling into Technology Square

Midtown is getting a new public house. When they’ll open is still up for debate.

The Atlanta Business Chronicle is reporting an opening in spring while Lisa Saxton, retail manager at The Georgia Institute of Technology, reports an October opening.

Called “The Barrelhouse,” the restaurant will serve a wide variety of American high-end pub food.

Located at 22 5th Street NW, Barrelhouse will open under the owners of East Atlanta Village’s Graveyard Tavern.

As reported on July 13, 2010, Barrelhouse will replace St. Charles Deli which will relocate to the space between Waffle House and Great Clips, previously occupied by Lexington Chocolatier, which closed.

Lara Sexton, retail manager for the Student Center Dining Services at The Georgia Institute of Technology has been working closely with the restaurant.

“It’ll be like a neighborhood bar with a great food,” said Sexton. “They’re going to do burgers; they’re going to serve [many different foods]. It’s almost like a gastro-pub. They have a full range bar [with] beer [and] alcohol, but they also focus heavily on serving really good food.”

Phillip Christensen, the manager of the Graveyard Tavern said that Barrelhouse will be more than the expected university restaurant for students, catering to the entire neighborhood.

“It’s pretty open-ended when we say American high-end pub food. We’re not only looking to attract the Georgia Tech alum, faculty, staff and students, but we’re also looking to attract a great neighborhood crowd in there as well,” said Christensen.

No permits have been filed with the City of Atlanta for construction.

  1. “It’s pretty open-ended when we say American high-end pub food. Please show me one pub that opens and doesn’t think of it’s self as “American high-end pub food.” I hope this does not mean chicken fingers, burger and some wings. A good sign will be the delivery trucks that pull up out front, hopefully Sisco will not be seen daily.

  2. Really, all I want in Midtown is an EAV-style not-‘high-end’, normal, cheap pub. I can think of 6+ other restaurants in midtown where I can get a $10 burger. just give me a cheap, low-end pub…

  3. I know they’re *trying* to target the non-university crowd, but let’s be real. When Tech students can find that they can binge drink within walking-distance, this place will be overrun with students. With that being said, let’s indeed hope the food isn’t too expensive. College students are poor after all.
