A building permit application was recently filed with Gwinnett County in relation to the proposed store. According to the application, the store would be located at 1006 Martins Chapel Road, near the intersection with Sugarloaf Parkway.

The grocery store has been a long time coming, with developers for Kroger eyeing the site since 2016. Construction documents from 2023 indicate that the new Kroger would be more than 118,000 square feet and include a pharmacy drive-thru and gas pumps, as well as an onsite Starbucks. There could also be up to 17,000 square feet of outparcel retail shops and restaurants at the site.

There are currently four Kroger stores in Lawrenceville, northeast of Atlanta: Russell Ridge at 1475 Buford Drive, Cruse Crossing at 950 Herrington Road, Lawrenceville Town Center at 455 Grayson Highway, and River Exchange at 2100 Riverside Parkway.

Kroger began in 1883, when Barney Kroger opened a grocery store in downtown Cincinnati. The company now has nearly 2,800 stores in 35 states operating under several different names, including Smith’s, Fry’s, and Dillons.

Kroger added more offerings (like beauty products and pharmacy and health services) in the 1980s. According to the company, they were the first grocery retailer in the country to test an electronic scanner, which they did in 1972.
