Several passersby were troubled to see the above sign displayed predominately on the gate of Moe’s and Joe’s Tavern in Virginia Highland.

Curious ourselves, we stopped by the Tavern where we were informed by management that the sign was making a jab at the newly opened burger “chain,” YEAH! Burger.

Will YEAH! Burger fight back?

Watch out for flying ketchup on the corner of N. Highland & Virginia Ave NE.

  1. Last I recall, Moe & Joe’s didn’t have gluten-free buns, fries, onion rings, condiments, … I liked their burger, but my wife can’t eat there.

If they want to “fight,” they can start carrying those things. Otherwise Moe & Joe’s is not even an option for some.

  2. Jason, god forbid moe and joe don’t cater to every bloody dietary disorder, sorry for your poor wife, but can no one make a living providing for their neighborhood in a tiny shop without critisism for not being universal? I mean really, dude!

  3. I’m not saying Moe’s & Joe’s has to cater to their neighborhood’s disorders (I know a few GF folks living in VaHi), but they shouldn’t make jabs at those who do.

  4. @Frankly, it doesn’t make sense because it’s missing a comma.

As for @Jason – it’s nice to have some GF options, but as an operator of 20 years myself, you just can’t meet every dietary need, nor should you be judged for not doing so. When I serve one celiac a week, I cannot justify ordering a product for everyone, just to meet the needs of the few. I am HAPPY to be VERY aware of your needs and have items available for you and to be aware of my menu so as I can help you make safe decisions, but not to build my entire menu, or widely-used items with you in mind.

It’s nice to be able to be a single item concept where these things are built in to your system. But it’s also easy when your single product (with variations, of course) is all you offer. That’s not so easy when you are building a menu for the masses, or neighborhood. That’s when you end up being a neighborhood niche instead of a national chain.

And before you judge me, I have a hard time eating out because of my own dietary restrictions. I am always limited to about 20% of a menu’s choices, so I eat where I have fun and where I like the staff, the environment and the other customers that go there. While I’ve never been to Moe’s & Joe’s, I’ll bet their venue has a lot more character than the open glass room that is Yeah Burger and even though I’m sure I could have an easier time ordering at Yeah Burger, I’m also sure that I would go to Moe’s & Joe’s any day because they are part of the neighborhood.

    Just my take.

  5. LOL! This is funny… especially when you consider that Moe’s & Joe’s is part of a much larger restaurant group than YEAH! Burger. Doesn’t the same group also own Dark Horse Tavern, Blind Willies, Limmerick Junction, Universal Joint, Steinbeck’s and others around the city?

Also, Taco Mac (even though the VaHi location is the original) has nearly 30 locations around the metro area.

I would absolutely love it if Yeah! Burger became a “chain”! I love their locally sourced & sustainable food.

  6. @Estaban, I was thinking the same thing…the owners of Moe’s and Joe’s also own Flatiron, 97 Estoria and the dreadful Young Augustine’s.

  7. M&J’s is an institution, YEAH is a cookie cutter concept copied from Shake Shack in NYC. 2 different personalities, kids don’t go to M&J’s and adults don’t hangout and drink at YEAH. M&J’s been around for 60 years, so I don’t know why they think YEAH will be a threat. College nights will still dominate M&J’s because students can’t afford $20 burgers, most adults can’t either.

    Bottom line is: Who cares?

  8. It doesn’t make sense IMO because two establishments does not make in any way comparable to Applebee’s especially considering the size and location (in the core of the city) of those establishments.

  9. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!! GAWD EVERYONE NEEDS TO RELAX BECAUSE THERE ARE ISSUES LIKE HOMELESSISM AND DRUGS THAT WE SHOULD DISCUSS, WHILE YOU PEOPLPE ARE DEBATING RUBY TUESDAYS!!!

  10. What Moe’s & Joes and the neighborhood should be more worried about is that places like Everybody’s Pizza that had been across the street for like 20 years just closed…seems to be happening way too often in Atlanta these days….Atlanta is a very fickle restaurant city…somethings hot for a year then gone…..and closures after 20 years is CRAZY! Support your neighborhood dives peeps….

  11. Everybody’s closed because of the labdlord’s desire not to renew the lease inorder to attract a flashier new concept. Competition makes everyone better. Sound familiar?

  12. What are all these burger joints going to do when the next case of mad cow breaks out? Become Chicken and Waffles?
BTW- It’s suicide to open a new restaurant in Atlanta. Either the city regulatory system, water tap in fees, excessive water/sewer rates or Park Atlanta will make sure you don’t make it past 6 months.

@ Estaban – Dark Horse & Neighbor’s is not owned by The same group that own’s M&J’s. The owner is Doug Landau, brother of Metrotainment owner Jeff Landau.
Limerick did have some common ownership as M&j’s but Irish Gentleman – Gordan Kerr is the sole owner now.
Tracy Crawley (Man) is the common owner in the other restaurants you mentioned. He has a great business plan. He keep’s a majority and brings in slave labor AKA as minority partners that make squat until they buy him out at a nice profit, or drink to forget they are getting screwed.
