UPDATE (Oct. 16, 2012): Gatsby’s Nightclub/Dessert Lounge to replace Midtown’s 3-Legged Cowboy

3 Legged Cowboy, a country-themed bar in Midtown, will close April 30.

The bar at 931 Monroe Drive made the announcement Sunday through Facebook.

“Rumors are true,” the 3 Legged Cowboy posted on Facebook Sunday. “We have sad news. Saturday, April 30th will be our last night open. Make sure to come this week and dance. We love everyone of you and appreciate the support over the years. Spread the word.”

Several supporters and Facebook friends reacted to the bar’s announcement including Billy Clifton Jr.

“Thank you for all the memories. I’ve been hanging out and dancing there for nearly eight years,” Clifton said in a Facebook comment.

3 Legged Cowboy will continue their dance parties, according to a Facebook posting. The next one is scheduled for May 5 to be held at the nearby F.R.O.G.S. Cantina in the Midtown Promenade shopping center .

A call placed to the bar Monday went unanswered.

  1. It’s a little pet peeve of mine – call it a gay bar, call it a bar, but it’s not an “alternative” anything.

  2. Wow the gay scene in Atlanta is really suffering. The only main nightlife options now are drag bars that are way too small to hold the crowds. It’s crazy to think back on when Atlanta had one of the hottest nightlife scenes in the country. So sad, but things change over time and you just have to deal with it. Chicago and Dallas both have very vibrant gay districts, I don’t know why Atlanta can’t pull this off?

  3. I have no feelings one way or the other about 3LC since I’ve never been, but HOW, just HOW do Rice Box and Frogs stay open? Those places serve absolutely TERRIBLE food. This part of town deserves so much better, I wish that whole half of the shopping center would just get bulldozed.

  4. CB, things aren’t always as they seem. Many “cover businesses” exist, even those which show no real customer traffic. Why? for the sole purpose of having a “tax shelter” or otherwise “legitimate” reason to run $$ thru, when ultimately something entirely different (ie: illegal transacting of all kinds) is secretly taking place.

I’ve worked in the Dept of Revenue, tax collecting, and some banking and credit union institutions. Sadly, it happens a lot more than most realize.

Then again, how boring life would be if EVERYONE played above board and by the rules.

    –S.
