The restaurant and lounge located across the street from the Civic Center, at 150 Pine Street, was going to open its café in November of last year, according to Samuel Michael Teklé, Scene Café co-owner.

The restaurant and lounge in its entirety was slated to open last January, Teklé told What Now Atlanta when we broke the news of its opening in July 2010.

But all we’ve heard is crickets until now.

Teklé filed a permit with City of Atlanta this fall to convert the space (part grocery store, part warehouse) to a restaurant. It’s costing at least $25,000 to finish the conversion.

According to city records, the restaurant’s owners are close to securing approval for the permit.

Although it has yet to open, the Atlanta restaurant has made quite a spectacle of itself.

Unfinished for more than a year, the building’s strange shape causes passersby to look twice while traveling Piedmont Avenue between Downtown and Midtown.

Here’s to hoping for a view of lights, cars and patrons in the very near future instead of just an architecturally bizarre building.

  1. Maybe he senses that the Peachtree-Pine Shelter is on the way out and this restaurant will be the first in a series of revitalizing steps. Hopefully.

  2. No, it’s not the building’s strange shape that causes passersby to look twice while traveling Piedmont Avenue between Downtown and Midtown. It’s the bum taking a dump in plain site in the nearby park.

That, my friends, I have personally seen.

I’m all for being an urban pioneer, but you have to be downright stupid to put a dime into this property.

  3. Thank you for no longer using the photos with that stupid logo for the photographer – drove me crazy…why do professional photographers not use logos on images, because it takes up too much room and all people end up looking at are the logos!

  4. Pine Street shelter is the obstacle to almost every problem in Midtown. They house 700 (that’s SEVEN HUNDRED) men, who spread out every morning after they get their free breakfast all over the Midtown area doing everything from aggressive panhandling to breaking and entering cars to soliciting sex. The woman who runs that place treats the midtown residents and the police department like the enemy. SHUT IT DOWN already.

  5. I applaud them for opening this place on Pine Street. Screw that disgusting shelter and it’s bum inhabitants! There are plenty of other shelters that can house and actually HELP these homeless people. Things will never turn around for this area if people don’t have the balls to change it… somebody has to lead the way.

Also, many of you need to stop being so scared of everything. Oh no! Someone taking a dump in the park! I’ve seen people piss and crap on the street in NYC… it’s a part of city life… makes things interesting… if you want things to be perfect go move to Alpharetta. And Jesus Christ, I know you all are afraid of being mugged but why does everyone lock themselves in their homes when darkness falls? I mean, you aren’t helping the situation by making the streets completely desolate at night…

  6. Yes, Mike, you’re right. I’m a prude and deserve to live in the suburbs because I find it disgusting to see a person taking a shit in broad day light in a park.

    You’re freakin nuts, man.

Give me your address so I can leave a pile on your front doorstep. Cause, you know, that’s what people living in a city should expect.

  7. Mike,

what planet are you from? You think people pissing and crapping in the streets makes it an interesting place to live? Its not black and white. We don’t have to choose between a city where people piss and crap in the streets and a city with no soul or culture. There is a place in between where you get culture but don’t have to deal with 700 men panhandling, smashing your car window, doing drugs, or screwing in the bushes outside your condo.

That shelter is THE MAIN reason why Midtown is struggling. The woman who runs that place has an openly adversarial relationship with Midtown residents and the Police. She encourages her men to panhandle. She encourages them to not cooperate with the police. I have PERSONALLY see one her guys scream and spit at a family on their way to the Fox to take in the Nutcracker (merry Christmas Susie!). One of them smashed the window of my car to steal change. I have seen two men BLOWING each other in the parking lot behind the 5th street church.

That shelter does nothing but provide them with a free meal and a meeting point. IT NEEDS TO GO NOW!
