LA Fitness in an email to its members Wednesday outlined plans for reopening its Georgia gyms on May 1.

The national chain, like other “non-essential businesses” in early-April was forced to temporarily close by state mandate in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Gov. Brian Kemp on Monday announced Georgia’s businesses could start reopening as early as Friday, April 24, with gyms being among the first able to start re-servicing customers.

Also included in Friday’s reopenings are bowling alleys, spas, and hair salons, contingent on businesses adhering to strict state-issued safety guidelines.

So far, the state has only issued such guidelines for salons and barbershops.

“We’re excited to let you know that Governor Kemp has given us the green light to reopen our Georgia locations,” according to the email.

“We are busy getting our clubs and employees ready, and our goal is to reopen May 1.”

LA Fitness in keeping with C.D.C. guidelines is making a few adjustments to its operations including limiting its building occupancy to one person for every 200 square feet, spreading out equipment to create safe social distancing, and keeping its spas, saunas, and daycare area closed.

Members will also be asked to use hand sanitizer upon entering the gym, and LA Fitness announced staff will disinfect frequently used areas and they are asking members to do the following:

  • Wash or sanitize your hands often
  • Wipe down equipment after each use
  • Bring a towel with you and your own mat
  • Give each other space and follow the social distancing signs
  • Most importantly, if you feel sick, have a fever, are coughing, have difficulty breathing, or if in the last two weeks you been in close contact with a person with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19, please stay home

LA Fitness is also modifying its hours of operation: Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  1. Pandemic still going strong, what could possibly go wrong?

As a member of LA Fitness who’s dying to get back into the gym, I’m not willing to literally die to go back to the gym. No way I’m stepping foot in the gym until GA is at least on the other side of this thing.

  2. Could not agree more, Jay. Is it possible to stop LA Fitness on this? I’ve tried emailing their corporate office, but nothing. This can’t be good.

  3. I started the process of cancelling my membership (they make it super difficult) when I heard the announcement. It isn’t just about my going to the gym. I am dying to go as much as the rest of you. It is about keeping their staff safe and the health of the community in general. The hospitals are struggling to keep their heads above water and opening the gym will almost definitely increase the number of cases. Shame on them.

  4. What ‘stop LA Fitness’? It’s like porn – don’t like it, don’t watch it. Don’t want take the risk, stay home – more room for the rest of us. Enough of the jackassery.

  5. It is very easy to cancel a membership for that person who said it is not. Download the cancellation form and send it in. Don’t forget you have one month left because you paid for that when you signed up. I don’t know how that will work since the clubs are closed now.
