The establishment first (quietly) opened its doors in July 2015 at 772 North Highland Avenue NE, where Belly General Store was previously located. At the time of opening, J&J’s Bourbon Bar and Grill did not have a website or a Facebook page because the restaurant only wanted news to spread by “word of mouth.”

New management is apparently taking a different approach as the restaurant now has a Facebook page where photos were added as recently as March 30th.

The restaurant/hookah lounge/bourbon bar/bagel shop has been known for having a bit of an identity crisis.

When What Now Atlanta first reported on the forthcoming concept, a few commenters expressed their desire for a breakfast spot to replace Belly.

Did the initial owners make the mistake of compromising their original concept in an effort to appeal to the neighborhood’s demand for bagels?

Nearby boutique/cafe concept Henry & June also began serving bagels last year in what seems like an effort to fill the void after Belly’s shuttering.

  1. The reviews have been so poor that I never bothered to check it out, even though it’s only a few blocks from my house. Whenever I’ve gone past the place is empty. Too bad because we were really happy there was gong to be a cool bourbon bar in the neighborhood. Then I heard that they didn’t have any signature bourbon cocktails and the staff didn’t know how to make any traditional ones either. That sealed it for me. Hope new management figures out what they want to be. Also hope they take down that tacky orange awning.

  2. I purchased a Groupon that doesn’t expire until Dec. 2016— my friends and I decided to check this place out. After waiting several minutes to be waited on we were told they no longer honor Groupons! The server never asked if we would like anything to drink or eat, stated he would get the Manager, we seen him speaking with the Manager , but the Manager apparently didn’t want to convey the message to us and walked into his Office and sent the Server back to tell us they were not honoring the Coupon, our group left, and will never return. Groupon is refunding me my money along with $10.00 for wasting my time to even go to this poorly run establishment!

  3. Who owns this building ? Does anybody know ? Very odd concept and so poorly executed. The meter parking has killed retail and dining in Virg High. There is no reason to shop or dine there anymore. Sad as it used to be such a great area. Now it is nothing but a few bars all duplicating each other. How many burgers and brews can we consume? The landlords are stupid and greedy beyond belief. No parking , no vision. Their greed allows empty buildings to sit and fester. The entire strip from Ponce to Murphy’s is almost empty. Only life is Harry & Sons corner then Murphy’s, Yeah, Fontaine. The rest of highland up to Ponce is dead or vacant.
