Building permit under review

Choice Hotels International, Inc. announced this past June plans for a future Comfort Suites hotel in downtown Atlanta with franchisee Atlanta Underground, LLC.

University Heights Atlanta Acquisitions submitted a building permit with the city of Atlanta last week to begin construction. That permit is currently under review.

Located at 54 Peachtree Street, the future home of the 156-suite hotel is comprised of an historic first five floors, having originally been constructed over 100 years ago, with an additional 11 floors added prior to the city's 1996 Summer games, most recently serving as student housing facilities for nearby Georgia State University.

The property was scheduled to begin its restoration and renovations process this past June and was tentatively scheduled to re-open as a Comfort Suites hotel in December 2010. Considering their first building permit was filed last week, it's hard to believe this project is still on schedule.

The only other permit was for sign business and even that was just a few weeks ago, assuming of course that the work being done requires permits.

The location's multi-million dollar renovation process mainly calls for complete furniture, fixtures and equipment replacements, adding a more urban new design aesthetic throughout.

The addition of a lounge area, meeting facilities, business center, fitness center and guest laundry facilities as well as specific VIP floors with added amenities are included in the renovation plans as well.

  1. Because what downtown Atlanta really needed was another hotel!

Seriously, though -- this is an awesome old building and I'm glad it's being used. Atlanta has lost too many buildings from this era to scattershot development.

  2. I think that this location would be perfect to watch the Peach Drop, and the building should ignite the fire of reinvestment in the "true" Downtown Atlanta. It is funny how Buckhead and Centinnial Park have become
"Downtown Atlanta" all of a sudden. If you build it, they will come!

  3. I agree with Darin about downtown needing another hotel; but Downtown Atlanta needs whatever it can get; so if it's another hotel, it's another hotel. So, I suppose this is good.
