The famed Highland Bakery is adding a new concept to its growing repertoire of Atlanta restaurants.

Coffee and Pastry,” the tentative name for the bakery’s new sister concept, is slated to open at 992 North Highland Ave., Henry Schwab, the architect overseeing the project, told What Now Atlanta (WNA) in a telephone interview Tuesday.

Schwab’s firm Architecture + Engineering filed a building permit application with City of Atlanta Monday as a first step in renovating the space, most recently occupied by Aurora Coffee.

The project is “small,” according to Schwab, and the space will look similar to the previous tenant. Most of the renovations include upgrades like ADA-compliant restrooms, he said.

Coffee is on track to open late summer, early fall.

Highland Bakery has locations in Old Fourth Ward, Midtown, Buckhead, G.A. Tech, and Emory. The bakery was not immediately available for comment.

  1. Best news I’ve seen in a while! Walking distance to the best blueberry crumb cake (I hope.)

  2. Great news. I can’t imagine this not doing well. I just don’t understand the rebranding. Wouldn’t the name “Highland Bakery” apply to this concept just as well their full-service locations? Also, what will this mean for Pieshop (opening soon in the former Honeybutter space)?

  3. Aurora didn’t relocate to Little 5 Points when they closed the Highlands Aurora. It had two locations, Virginia Highlands and L5P before the closure. The L5P store has been open since 1995. Aurora consolidated its business to just the L5P location when it closed the Highlands store.

  4. I actually think it’s smart for them to rebrand, but would be nice if the name was a derivative of the HB name. When we moved to Atlanta we once ate at the Midtown HB, pretty awful, so we never dreamed of going to HB O4W, thinking it would be the same. And that was a mistake, HB is our favorite breakfast place.
