When I Was Young I Walked To School,… Uphill,…. Both Ways. Not Anymore.

Georgia State University opened its state-of-the-art Alpharetta academic facility yesterday.

The 45,000-square-foot Alpharetta center, at 3705 Brookside Parkway, began serving students with 16 classrooms, including three large tiered “conference center” type classrooms, an open computer lab for student use, plenty of study areas and lots of parking.

Thousands of graduate and undergraduate students, primarily working professionals, will be attending classes of the J. Mack Robinson College of Business and the College of Education at the new GSU facility. The center is adjacent to the existing campus building.

The Robinson College of Business continues to offer Flexible MBA classes and the Professional MBA program in Alpharetta. With the new space, the college has begun offering its Executive Master of Science in Managing Information Technology at the Alpharetta campus. Previously, the degree was offered only at the downtown Atlanta campus.

“This new facility is part of our broader plan to provide the best education in the best facilities possible in every corner of metro Atlanta,” said H. Fenwick Huss, dean of the Robinson College of Business.

In addition, the Robinson College has expanded its offerings of undergraduate courses available in Alpharetta. Students majoring in accounting or marketing can now complete the last 60 hours of their degrees at the facility. All courses will be taught by the same faculty who teach in Georgia State’s highly ranked undergraduate program in downtown Atlanta.

“Our objective is to make educational opportunities as convenient as possible for our students,” Huss said.

The College of Education also will expand its graduate level courses in teacher education and offer an undergraduate program in early childhood education at the new facility.

“The demand for our programs is high and this facility will help us meet this demand,” said College of Education Dean Randy Kamphaus. “In addition, our faculty who have seen the facility are very impressed with its capabilities for delivering high quality instruction.”

Georgia State has had a presence in Alpharetta since 2000. With the opening of the new building, Georgia Perimeter College will take over GSU’s original building there. It’s the second building of what is envisioned as a three-building campus.
