Brunello Cucinelli, Canali, Etro, Hermès, and Theory welcomed shoppers Thursday.

Buckhead Atlanta, the highly-anticipated  mixed-use development on Peachtree Street, officially opened Thursday in a ceremony attended by Dene Oliver, CEO of OliverMcMillan (the project’s developer), and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, among other community leaders, officials, media, and the occasional shopper.

“We’re celebrating the re-opening of the streets of Buckhead,” Oliver said referring to the physical streets of Buckhead, not to be confused with the project’s former name.

“We wanted [Buckhead Atlanta] to look like it’s been developed over time. This is not a shopping mall. This is the end of a street scene.”

During the grand opening ceremony, shoppers could be seen leaving Brunello Cucinelli, Canali, Etro, Hermès, and Theory with shopping bags, the first of several planned tenants at the development that are now open.

Oliver and his team traveled to London, Paris, Milan, among other fashion capitals of the world, for research and leasing at Buckhead Atlanta, he said.

“Buckhead is clearly on the map in Europe,” Oliver said. “There’s no question.”

Other Buckhead Atlanta tenants will open in the coming weeks “organically,” Hunter Richardson, Managing Director of Development at OliverMcMillan, said at the event Thursday.

“It’s an organic opening,” Richardson said. “We’re opening [Buckhead Atlanta] like a city district where stores open one at a time.”

“By opening five stores this week and a couple the week after, every time you come out here, there’s going to be something new to discover.”

Buckhead Atlanta announced this week that Jonathan Adler, the American home furnishings designer, has been added to the lineup of retailers. The district expects one retailer or restaurant to open each week through the end of the year.

  1. Atlanta is a really fickle market. I think shoppers will frequent this new shopping district in Buckhead until it’s no longer new, and then it’s on to the next one. I’ve watched many retailers in fashion and restaurants open and close shortly after. Anxious to see what happens here.
