Alma Cocina to open Downtown.

Fifth Group is opening their sixth restaurant.

The Atlanta-based restaurant group announced in February it would open a Tex-Mex concept in the now shuttered II Mulino Italian restaurant space.

Today, Fifth Group has announced the restaurant’s name.

Called Alma Cocina, which stands for “soul kitchen,” Fifth Group’s Tex-Mex restaurant will open at One Ninety One Peachtree tower downtown this November, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

II Mulino Restaurant first opened Dec. 2008 and closed Nov. 2010 and is expected to open elsewhere, according to their website.

Serving up authentic Tex-Mex and Mexican-inspired dishes for lunch and dinner, Fifth Group will also provide catering services to the Downtown area through their established catering company, Bold American.

Taking a 5,200-square-foot space with seating for 195, the space will have two bar areas with booths and tables extending into the office building’s atrium.

Ai3 and Bill Peace of Peace have teamed up to oversee the design.

This will be the sixth Atlanta-area restaurant for Fifth Group Restaurants, the Atlanta based restaurant group who’s portfolio includes South City Kitchen (Midtown and Vinings), La Tavola, Ecco, and El Taco.

  1. It’s best chance for success is lunch pricing. Need to ensure that they have a good lunch crowd or else they’ll be gone just as quickly as Il Mulino.

  2. Agreed – re: the importance of a lunch crowd, given the location. That said, if this is a good restaurant, it’s not too deep into the depths of downtown, to prevent people from heading there for a meal.

  3. event traffic is crucial. This space is very “hidden” on peachtree with the lack of store frontage. Also, the lack of parking that is walkable is tough for this location, especially when you are parking about a block away at night. Best of luck!

  4. Pappasitios is the best Tex Mex. This place wont top that. Hopefully they don’t screw with it the way Atlanta does everything else. Like have goat cheese organic cheese dip. I’m Betting they will.

  5. El Taco misses by miles on the food but the Va-Hi locals sustain them because of the convenience in a walkable neighborhood even with all the crime. This new Mexican’t concept downtown will be an obvious failure, this location and owner egos with their “too big to fail” mentality will be their kiss of death. This will be purely tourist and conventioneer oriented.
