Update (Feb. 7 2011): Taxco Mexican Restaurant fails health inspection and tries again
Newspaper covered windows normally aren’t a good sign
Taxco Restaurante Mexicano on Roswell Road appears to be closed.
Boarded up windows and an endless ring and no message from their listed telephone number gives the appearance they’ve gone under like the rest of Atlanta.
Reader Patricia Tinsley wrote in wondering what we knew about the restaurants non-responsiveness and their boarded windows.
So we called around to various neighboring restaurants to get the scoop.
An employee at Einstein Brothers Bagels next store confirms the restaurant located at 4500 Roswell Road is not closed.
They are taking advantage of the holiday season and are remodeling. After opening in 1983, the restaurant could definitely use the renovation love.
There is no time line for their renovation but we for one look forward to returning when they open for some delicious Mexican chicken noodle soup.

Hey, you scared us too! This is a great little Mexican restaurant and one of the highlights of our trip to the Big A.
For a news service that is supposed to be informing us, you ask a lot of qustions. So, is Taxco closing or not? Check with their suppliers. Where are your researchrs? Maybe you want us to give you the news?

When I first saw the newspaper covered windows, I immediately thought that they were taking advantage of the season to do some remodeling. And, I was right! They are never short of patrons at Taxco. And, the interior looked like it was overdue for updates by 20 years. Good for them!

I heard they had to renovate their restaurant due to scoring a 53 on their health code! I’m sure the city made them renovate it if this is the case!
So when is Taxco, Roswell Rd due to re-open, is that not the only question???
Don’t bother trying Tacos & Tequilas nearby. Zzzzzzzzz and too expensive.
Have gone to Taxco for decades and almost had a stroke when my son and I drove up one night to find it closed. Here’s hoping it’s just for renos…
Wow! Here is a link to the Fulton County Public Health Department. After having a score of 99 in 2009 now they have a 63 from that last inspection in December. That score was up from the 58 they had in November. I hope they cleaning it up but they might have had to close in order to avoid being closed. Hmm Anyway here is the link.

Now I’m torn. I love Taxco, and I’ve been waiting very impatiently for them to reopen. I’ve known they were closed for remodeling, since the many signs on their windows very clearly indicate this. However, now that I know it was for health code violations, I’m not so sure I want to go back. Makes me sad, I love this place. Anyone else feeling this way?
I have eaten there for nearly 12 years. I have never, ever had an illness or even questionable food there. The actual written report which can be accessed through the above link did talk about a seeming lack of knowledge of food preparation safety and regulations. But all of this is very recent. In past years the scores have been in the 90’s so perhaps it is just a bad manager. I really hope they can sort this out. If they say they are remodeling then there should be dumpsters outside. The issue with the health department wasn’t with the decor it was with food being kept at improper temperatures, cross contamination of food types, etc. so I see smoke and mirrors.
Yeah, Kate. I think it’s probably been about that many years for me too, now that I think about it. I’ve never had a health issue or any other problem. I hope they can get it together and come back.
UPDATE for everyone:
So, I drove there today, as I do most every weekend to check on the status. There were new signs that said they would reopen this week, which means next week. There were people outside and I asked them, if it meant next week and they said yes. Then a woman said Tuesday. So, good news.
been going to Taxco for decades myself. I love Taxco. I get their soup every week. However I hate to admit this- but I have seen on more than one occasion they reuse chips. Ugh! As in they throw the left over chips from your table back in the same container they get “fresh” chips. Ever notice the chip basket is not taken the same time as dirty dishes??!! Thats why. so wrong!

They still aren’t answering their phone even tho they’re open. I’d love to order a take-out but no answer. 2-11-11 Very confusing…
It’s about time Taxco closed. Wished they put a Wendy’s or something else there. I can’t believe after the constant low health inspections they were even allowed to reopen.
Peg – u must work for Taxco. Your assessment of Tacos and Tequilas is WAY off base. I’m a Meadowbrook residence and have enjoyed having Taxco at the end of our Subd (mainly due to their drinks:). However over the years their chips get colder, their food gets greasier, and the building just rots away.
Then came Tacos and Tequilas! I was worried at first due to the location historically being home to one failed establishment after another. To my surprise the ambiance is clean, fresh, and new. The food is above and beyond any Mexican food in the Buckhead / Roswell rd area. They make Taxco seem like a taco truck with cheap dirty ingredients. While Nuevo Laredo is still my favorite Atlanta Mexican retreat, Tacos and Tequilas stands above and beyond Taxco.
Dishes to try: enchiladas verdes, T&T burrito, T&T nachos, all their soups!, carne asada, tamales, and I’m sure there’s more I just need to eat there a few more times to experience them prior to recommending. Also, if u sit at the bar ask for Victor. Staff is polite, BILINGUAL, clean and professional!
Only negative iOS there salsa is not quite to my liking. -j-
