Modular construction company SG Blocks is moving forward with plans for a 134-unit housing project off of Norman Berry Drive in the city of East Point, according to an announcement this week.

The company said in a press release that it has acquired a 6-acre project site through subsidiary SGB Development Corp. and in partnership with CMC Development Group, ZT Architecture + Land Development, and Community Development Consortium.

Based in New York, SG Blocks uses shipping containers to build projects, a type of method gaining in popularity as a potentially cheaper, faster, and more efficient alternative to traditional construction.

Its new Atlanta-area project will be constructed in Durant, Oklahoma and delivered to Atlanta for a projected completion date of the third quarter of 2023, according to this week’s announcement. Named Norman Berry Village, the project is expected to cost about $21 million, according to SG Blocks.

“We have identified Atlanta as a market where we want to develop based upon demographics and unmet need,” SG Blocks Chairman and CEO Paul Galvin said in a statement. “It is our preferred method of development to partner with local, talented land owners and real estate developers to expand our ability to bring safe and green housing to the market.”

SG Blocks didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on acquisition price or the exact location of where it plans for Norman Berry Village to rise.

A project site rendering for the development shows it would rise in the form of two main buildings just off of both Norman Berry Drive and Washington Road and near Akron Street.

Plans call for a mix of for-rent one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments and for amenities to include a clubhouse, a gym, and outdoor green spaces. The apartment complex as a whole would be about 125,000 square feet, according to this week’s announcement.

“We are excited to move forward in our partnership with SGB DevCorp on Norman Berry Village,” CMC Development Group President Shaun Belle said in a statement. “SG Blocks’ proprietary modular construction expertise allows us to deliver high quality housing units at lower cost, to help serve Atlanta’s growing need for reasonably-priced housing.”

SG Blocks said in its announcement that it expects to begin site work in the third quarter of this year.

A publicly traded company, it will control the planning and construction process for Norman Berry Village and earn manufacturing revenue and a share of development fees, it said in its announcement.
